General Discussion / Reliable Free VPN Service?
« on: October 15, 2014, 03:24:07 AM »
Hi Biff et al,

Does anyone know of a reliable free VPN Service?

I want to register on the Debian forums but they use damn IP Blocking filters and all the VPNs I've tried are also blacklisted.

Thanks, Michael.

Could the following be of interest to you?

http://superuser.com/questions/131193/debian-ubuntu-locales-and-language-settings

Or set up an install of the lxde in VirtualBox and try to reproduce the problem.

Could this problem be due to missing or incomplete ".mo" files?

Under /usr/share/locale, there are folders for es/LC_MESSAGES, es_AR/LC_MESSAGES, es_ES/LC_MESSAGES, es_MX/LC_MESSAGES AND es_VE/LC_MESSAGES.

The most populated of the above folders is es/LC_MESSAGES.

Using msgunfmt, I've already looked at synaptic.mo.

Which .mo file contains the translations for the Software Origins window?

Thanks Michael.

Hi Biff et al,

It took me a while to finally settle on a distribution for the old Desktop computer (CPU: Pentium P4 2.66 GHz; RAM: 512 MB, 333MHz; 40 GB Hard Drive, 58 MB/s) I am renovating for my Landlord.

The critical factors, that finally swayed me to select wattOS R8 LXDE 32-bit, were the speed and low memory footprint of wattOS R8.

I couldn't appreciate how low the memory footprint was, though, until I actually installed it. Unlike other distros I had installed there was an actual, and significant, drop of 20 MB in the memory footprint measured when the Desktop had become active (77 MB). This is really good for a computer that only has 512 MB to work with. Every little bit helps. The computer gets to the Login prompt in 45 seconds whereas the previously installed Windows XP Professional SP3 was taking 52 seconds until the Desktop was stabilised enough to start using it.

I would like to know if there is an equally significant drop in the memory foot print when the MATE version is installed.

I am really hoping that 64-bit versions of R9 will support UEFI (Secure Boot disabled) so that I can try them on my Laptop.

Kudos and Thanks, Michael.

I think this is a little bit old, written for "Lenny", but since it is Debian...

http://perlgeek.de/en/article/set-up-a-clean-utf8-environment

That didn't work neither unfortunately. I even tried adding the es_ES.UTF-8 locale and setting it as the default but the same problem still exists.

I've attached 2 images which demonstrate what is happening. The same thing happens when you click on the Menu item to open Synaptic and it prompts you for the Administrative password. Some of the text is in Spanish and some is in English.

It would be interesting if you could try adding the same Spanish locales as I have to see if it happens for you also.

It's the same deal with the MATE version.

Thanks, Michael.

I've read that page already.

What are you trying to say?

Thanks, Michael.

https://wiki.debian.org/ChangeLanguage

Spanish, Castilian (Peru) was chosen during Installation and the command "env | grep LANG" confirms that with the output being "es_PE.UTF-8".

Another example is that when the mouse pointer is hovered over the Logout button, at the far right of the Taskbar Panel, the Tooltip displays "Logout" instead of "Salir" but the Menu correctly displays "Salir".

So, this is why I am wanting to know if there is a solution for this like an updated language database file?

Thanks, Michael.

Maybe you have to  ;D

It didn't work. :(

However, I made sure to save an image of the partition first.

I've since tried XFE which is really fast but I have now installed SpaceFM which features Tree panels for each pane and also integrates with the Widgets themes wheras XFE uses its own themes. SpaceFM is practically instantaneous to open.

wattOS R8 / Software Origins Window - Displayed Language not 100% correct
« on: October 11, 2014, 01:06:28 AM »
Hi Biff et al,

The text displayed in the Software Origins Window is not 100% correct for the chosen Locale/Language.

The locale I am using, for the old PC I am setting up, is "es_PE.UTF-8 UTF-8".

Some of the text is in English and some is in Spanish. This applies to some of the Sub-dialogue Windows also.

This is happening with the LXDE 32-bit version.

Is there a solution for this like an updated language database file?

Thanks, Michael.

wattOS R8 / Re: Update Manager - Safe Upgrade Dialogue
« on: October 07, 2014, 12:47:12 AM »
Are this 9 year old child really ready to administrate udating/upgrading the install? Maybe that is the question you should ask yourself... Would it be possible for you to do it once in a while? Or some other grown up in the vicinty of the child. Just a thought.  :)

I am guessing there would be less interaction required by using the Menu Item for Update Manager but she would then need to be able to decide whether to do a "Safe Upgrade" or not which is why I want to know the following.

What is the "standard" choice when using the Update Manager? No or Yes?

What happens when No is selected?

What happens when Yes is selected?

What happens in the background when either of those choices is activated?

The dialogue window is asking "Do you wish to make a "safe-upgrade", that does not remove packages or install new packages?"

How can an upgrade be performed without installing any packages? Doesn't seem logical to me.

Thanks, Michael.

wattOS R8 / Re: Upload photos to iPhone 3GS?

https://wiki.debian.org/iPhone

I had already been through a lot that.

I got some improvement with the phone now being shown in PCManFM.

I installed gtkpod and GPixPod but it was the same story. Files can be copied onto the phone but the phone is not displaying them probably because the Photos.sqlite file needs to be updated is my guess.

Hasta luego, Michael.

wattOS R8 / Upload photos to iPhone 3GS?
« on: October 05, 2014, 04:57:42 AM »
Hi Biff et al,

I've done some searching but haven't found anything yet on the Internet.

The phone uses iOS 6.1.6.

I can add files to it but I can't see them in the phones Albums. It would seem that some kind of database needs to be updated on the phone also.

Anyone know of an application that will allow you to upload photos to an iPhone so that you can see them on the iPhone?

Thanks, Michael.

This comes down to personal preferences, I always use apt in terminal when upgrading. Maybe you should learn her to use the method most suitable for the person that will give her support if/when things go bad.

Well, I'm still a Linux noob myself and I've been using Synaptic usually.

So, when I didn't see any Notification icon, for upgrades, in the Taskbar and I noticed the Menu item for Update Manager, I was thinking this may be the path to choose but when given the option of a Safe Upgrade, or not, I'm not sure, myself, what each path (Yes or No button) will do and which is REALLY the best option.

Thanks, Michael.

wattOS R8 / Remastersys Instructions?
« on: October 03, 2014, 08:53:59 PM »
Hi Biff et al,

I want to do a test run of remastering wattOS R8 LXDE 32-bit.

I've found the following page and I was wondering if someone could confirm that I'm ok to roll with these instructions.

http://lxlinux.com/remastersys.html

According to the repositories, libglib2.0-0 (2.33.12+really2.32.4-5) is already installed. The latest version available is 2.42.0-2 at https://packages.debian.org/sid/i386/libglib2.0-0/download.

So, should I skip step (iv)?

I'm also wondering what effect if any the installation of glib2.0_2.31.12-0ubuntu1.debian.tar.gz will have on the above libglib2.0-0 that is currently installed.

I'm not sure what step (vi) is about. Is this indicating, that after following step (v), that there should be a corresponding entry in the sources.list file?

Anything else, or any gotchas, that I should know about?

Thanks, Michael.
