wattOS R8 / NVIDIA Legacy Driver Installation Problems :(
« on: November 28, 2014, 05:47:17 AM »
Hi Ron, Blaze et al,

I was trying to install the driver in the Live USB with Persistence environment.

After poking around on the web and seeing that the nvidia-legacy-96xx-driver (wheezy backport) package was marked as Broken after marking it for installation, I marked the nvidia-glx-legacy-96xx package for installation.

nvidia-detect says that the card is only supported up to the 96.43 legacy driver series. It recommends the installation of the nvidia-glx-legacy-96xx package which is what I have attempted to install.

I initiated the installation and clicked on the Forward button for the 2 dialogue windows that appeared.

At the end of the installation an Error dialogue was displayed with the following text.

Code: [Select]
E: linux-image-3.2.0-4-rt-686-pae: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2
The output from the Synaptic terminal is as follows.

I've poked around some more for a solution but haven't been successful. I tried the following without any success.

Code: [Select]
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install -f
apt-get dist-upgrade

I've restored the Live USB, to the images I took before I started this install, ready for another go. In this state, the installed linux-image packages are as follows which is the default ISO configuration I believe.

Code: [Select]
linux-image-3.13-0.bpo.1-486 (Installed and Latest version are the same - 3.13.10-1~bpo70+1 - Linux 3.13 for older PCs)

linux-image-486 (Installed - 3.13+56~bpo70+1, Latest - 3.13+62~bpo70+1 - Linux for older PCs (meta-package))

The computer has a Pentium P4 2.66 GHz CPU which supports PAE. It has a 64MB Graphics Card that uses an NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX 440 GPU with AGP 8X.

I'm wondering if I should have performed all available upgrades, except for the udev ones I've already mentioned in a previous topic, before attempting anything with the installation of the NVIDIA drivers?

I'm also wondering which and if any of the following packages or others should be installed to replace those linux-image packages listed above before attempting the NVIDIA Driver installation?

Code: [Select]
linux-image-3.2.0-4-rt-686-pae (3.2.63-2+deb7u1 - Linux 3.2 for modern PCs, PREEMPT_RT)

linux-image-3.16-0.bpo.2-686-pae (3.16.3-2~bpo70+1 - Linux 3.16 for modern PCs)

linux-image-3.16-0.bpo.3-686-pae (3.16.5-1~bpo70+1 - Linux 3.16 for modern PCs)

linux-image-686-pae (3.2+46 - Linux for modern PCs (meta-package))

linux-image-rt-686-pae (3.2+46 - Linux for modern PCs (meta-package))

In other words, which packages should be installed/upgraded in order to use NVIDIA drivers with the hardware of the computer?

In what order should I install these packages?

Thanks and hasta pronto, Michael.

wattOS R8 / Package Installation and Upgrade Management
« on: November 18, 2014, 01:20:45 AM »
Hi Ron, Blaze et al,

Whilst looking for a solution to the translation problems with Update Manager, I discovered the following page.

Advice needed: update-manager in wheezy considered dangerous

So, I installed gnome-packagekit (3.4.2-2) which installs 3 applications (Software Update, Add/Remove Software and Software Settings).

Software Update appears to have to download the list of available updates every time it is opened. It only has 2 categories which are Security Updates and Other Updates. The list of Security Updates matches what I see in Update Manager.

There is no Third Party Updates category and those problem packages associated with the use of Broadband USB Modems are included under the category of Other Updates.

Software Update shows the same packages as Update Manager.

Translations appear to be working for all 3 applications for the gnome-packagekit package.

I noticed the following being suggested as an upgrade.
Linux for older PCs (meta-package) 3.16+62~bpo70+1

Currently, the following 2 packages are installed.
Code: [Select]
linux-image-3.13-0.bpo.1-486 (for use on PCs with a Single Processor not supporting PAE)
Installed and Ultimate version are the same - 3.13.10-1~bpo70+1
linux-image-486 (for use on PCs with a Single Processor not supporting PAE)
Installed version is 3.13+56~bpo70+1 and Ultimate version is 3.16+62~bpo70+1

Should any of these be installed on a PC with a Pentium P4 that supports PAE and has the following characteristics?

This all leaves me wondering as to how to advise new Linux Users, who do not have advanced computer experience, as to the best way to manage Package Installations and Updates instead of blindly accepting what is presented by the various Package/Update Managers.

Given that Update Manager has a category for Third Party Updates, is that the preferred application, at present, for managing updates for non-technical users? If so, then, I still need a solution to the translation problems with it.

For myself, when testing changes to the Operating System (OS), I have been using partclone from the Terminal command line of the Live Persistent version I have on a USB Flash Drive. I am thinking that the easiest way, for non-technical people, to manage things in case an installation or upgrade needs to be reversed is to use a graphical backup utility. Which would you recommend? Can these be used to backup and restore the partition of an active OS?

Otherwise, the other option, given that I will be remastering the installation once I have it all configured and configuring a USB Flash Drive with persistence with the remastered ISO as a backup system, is to document instructions to do what I have been doing with partclone but non-technical users may find that to be rather tedious and inconvenient.

With Synaptic (version 0.75.13), I discovered that Filters can't be deleted. Would it be safe to install version 0.81.2 from Jessie which fixes this problem?
http://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/changelogs/main/s/synaptic/unstable_changelog

After installing gnome-packagekit, Synaptic now has a Rapid Filter feature in the Toolbar as I had seen when using Mint 16 KDE. So, that's 1 benefit to installing gnome-packagekit.

Does anyone have a clue as to what Dependency, installed for the gnome-packagekit, would have caused that change in Synaptic? The version number of Synaptic was not changed.

Thanks, Michael.

wattOS R8 / Update Manager - Third Party Updates?

Hi Ron, Blaze et al,

With reference to the Broadband USB Modem not switching to modem mode topic I started, for example, would it be best to assume that Third Party Updates should not be installed?

Thanks, Michael.

Linux and desktops / Desktop Menu: Recent Documents / Recent Applications?
« on: November 08, 2014, 04:18:20 AM »
Hi Biff, Blaze et al,

In the MATÉ Desktop Environment there is a Recent Documents item for the Places menu.

Is it possible to also have a Recent Applications item for the Applications menu?

With regards to LXDE, according to the following page it is possible to add Sub-menus for Recent Files and Devices.

http://lxlinux.com/openbox.html

Could the Recent Files script be modified to create a Sub-menu for Recent Applications?

Thanks, Michael.

wattOS R8 / [Solved] - Best Way to Prevent Bluetooth from Starting?
« on: November 01, 2014, 08:13:02 PM »
Hi Biff, Blaze et al,

What's the best way to prevent Bluetooth from starting?

Should I just alter the Execution permissions for /etc/init.d/bluetooth so that Nobody can execute it?

Thanks, Michael.

Solved
Hi Biff et al,

Of all the files that are installed in /usr/share/polkit-1/actions, when wattOS R8 LXDE 32-bit is installed, only the files org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.policy and org.opensuse.cupspkhelper.mechanism.policy come anywhere close to providing an adequate and consistently applied range of translations.

I can provide Spanish translations where necessary.

Am I correct in surmising that this should be the responsibility of the people who maintain each package?

Thanks, Michael.

wattOS R8 / Synaptic - Software Origins - Updates Tab - Ubuntu?
« on: October 24, 2014, 02:18:43 AM »
Hi Biff et al,

I'm still working on rectifying the the problem with poorly maintained .po Language Translation files.

On the Updates tab of the Software Origins (package: software-properties-gtk) dialogue window for Synaptic, there is an option for "Notify me of a new Ubuntu version".

Why would you want to be notified of a new Ubuntu version when you are using a Debian based distro?

Thanks, Michael

Hi Biff et al,

Can anyone recommend a PO (Translation File) Editor that allows you to edit both the Header and Original Messages and correctly displays the text of the Original Message including formatting markup (e.g. <big><b></b></big>)?

Gtranslator allows editing of the Header but I can't edit the Original Messages.

PoEdit allows editing of the Original Messages but isn't displaying the markup and doesn't have an interface for editing the Header.

Please provide the version number if you are absolutely sure of an application that will allow the above.

Thanks, Michael.

General Discussion / Reliable Free VPN Service?
« on: October 15, 2014, 03:24:07 AM »
Hi Biff et al,

Does anyone know of a reliable free VPN Service?

I want to register on the Debian forums but they use damn IP Blocking filters and all the VPNs I've tried are also blacklisted.

Thanks, Michael.

Hi Biff et al,

It took me a while to finally settle on a distribution for the old Desktop computer (CPU: Pentium P4 2.66 GHz; RAM: 512 MB, 333MHz; 40 GB Hard Drive, 58 MB/s) I am renovating for my Landlord.

The critical factors, that finally swayed me to select wattOS R8 LXDE 32-bit, were the speed and low memory footprint of wattOS R8.

I couldn't appreciate how low the memory footprint was, though, until I actually installed it. Unlike other distros I had installed there was an actual, and significant, drop of 20 MB in the memory footprint measured when the Desktop had become active (77 MB). This is really good for a computer that only has 512 MB to work with. Every little bit helps. The computer gets to the Login prompt in 45 seconds whereas the previously installed Windows XP Professional SP3 was taking 52 seconds until the Desktop was stabilised enough to start using it.

I would like to know if there is an equally significant drop in the memory foot print when the MATE version is installed.

I am really hoping that 64-bit versions of R9 will support UEFI (Secure Boot disabled) so that I can try them on my Laptop.

Kudos and Thanks, Michael.

wattOS R8 / Software Origins Window - Displayed Language not 100% correct
« on: October 11, 2014, 01:06:28 AM »
Hi Biff et al,

The text displayed in the Software Origins Window is not 100% correct for the chosen Locale/Language.

The locale I am using, for the old PC I am setting up, is "es_PE.UTF-8 UTF-8".

Some of the text is in English and some is in Spanish. This applies to some of the Sub-dialogue Windows also.

This is happening with the LXDE 32-bit version.

Is there a solution for this like an updated language database file?

Thanks, Michael.

wattOS R8 / Upload photos to iPhone 3GS?
« on: October 05, 2014, 04:57:42 AM »
Hi Biff et al,

I've done some searching but haven't found anything yet on the Internet.

The phone uses iOS 6.1.6.

I can add files to it but I can't see them in the phones Albums. It would seem that some kind of database needs to be updated on the phone also.

Anyone know of an application that will allow you to upload photos to an iPhone so that you can see them on the iPhone?

Thanks, Michael.

wattOS R8 / Remastersys Instructions?
« on: October 03, 2014, 08:53:59 PM »
Hi Biff et al,

I want to do a test run of remastering wattOS R8 LXDE 32-bit.

I've found the following page and I was wondering if someone could confirm that I'm ok to roll with these instructions.

http://lxlinux.com/remastersys.html

According to the repositories, libglib2.0-0 (2.33.12+really2.32.4-5) is already installed. The latest version available is 2.42.0-2 at https://packages.debian.org/sid/i386/libglib2.0-0/download.

So, should I skip step (iv)?

I'm also wondering what effect if any the installation of glib2.0_2.31.12-0ubuntu1.debian.tar.gz will have on the above libglib2.0-0 that is currently installed.

I'm not sure what step (vi) is about. Is this indicating, that after following step (v), that there should be a corresponding entry in the sources.list file?

Anything else, or any gotchas, that I should know about?

Thanks, Michael.

wattOS R8 / PCManFM (1.2.2-1 - i386) for LXDE?
« on: October 03, 2014, 01:09:30 AM »
Hi Biff et al,

Has anyone installed PCManFM (1.2.2-1 - i386) from Debian Jessie in wattOS R8 LXDE 32-bit?

If so, have there been any problems?

Don't want to be the cuy (guinea pig) if I can help it.  ;D

Thanks, Michael.
