Cannot even get wired connection

Hello everyone,

I've just installed WattOS R8 LXDE32 on my rather elderly Dell Inspiron 1300, in order to refurb and donate to my brother. It seemed to install fine, unfortunately it does not recognise any wired connection, despite the same machine picking up a wired connection when running Xubuntu live just minutes before the install of WattOS.

Googling around found a fix that suggested I needed to alter the networkmanager.conf file which I duly did, changing "managed=false" to "managed=true". I then restarted network manager as per instructions but this did not work. I also rebooted to no effect.

Another fix was to ## out lines in the etc/network/interfaces file (I ##'ed out "allow-hotplugh eth0") but this didn't do anything either.

Several reboots, and switching router on and off had no effect either.

I'm stumped really. At least when wireless doesn't work you can plug in and download something to fix it!

if you want to try something that worked for me install wicd

^{sudo apt-get install wicd}

are you sure you have all drivers? what is your lan card? I presume you have wireless connection at least. I've noticed not all non-free drivers are installed (if you need one). pay your attention during system start and read all warnings. in my case rtl drivers were missed. you can also check all pci elements (lspci command) to identify your card.

Just to clarify, I have neither wired nor wireless connection, so I can't install anything at all!!

Regarding drivers - I don't know how to check this. If I can find out, is it possible to download the right ones on another computer and transfer them across?

usually network elements are either pci cards or usb dongles/cards. try in terminal

lspci command to identify all pci devices and

lsusb respectively. in this way you can check the names and google the kind of driver

sooner or later you need any network connectivity. assuming it's driver problem, you are to install it. xubuntu proofs that you have ethernet card working. ubuntu installs all free and non-free drivers. I'm afraid wattos installs only some of them. what about wireless? you do not have it working or you do not have access point to check how it works? to some extend it's important. if you need non-free driver you should look around any network device (probable wired or wireless dongle) to get connection and install non-free driver.

you can also try mobile (gsm) dongle, however it might be more difficult.

When I looked up your computer, I found these installed: Dell 1470 Internal Wireless 802.11a/b/g and Integrated Network Card (ethernet). You should have drivers for those in wattOS R8 install cd. You can always reinstall and make sure to connect to the internet first, before installing.

So I started again from scratch, and downloaded the iso again, and this time confirmed the checksum. As last time, I created a bootable USB with unetbootin. I then booted my current laptop (i.e. NOT the one I've been having trouble with) with the USB and when I clicked on the Network Manager icon it recognised that there was a wired connection and connected to it. Trying to boot the old one again I had the same problem, doesn't recognise any wired connection even though in both instances the cable is connected.

as MAROMAN said:do "lspci" and look for "Ethernet Controller" on the list

then google search to find out what linux package contains driver for that uncommon device dell used
download its "debian" package, get it into your dell  and use "gdebi" to install it

for your wifi model, look for "Network Controller" in the "lspci" output
