Installation of WattOS R10 in VirtualBox
« on: October 27, 2016, 10:00:36 AM »
Hello !
I had several problems trying to install WattOS R10 in VirtualBox. The graphic drivers went wrong and this was resolved by CTRL right + F1 followed by CTRL right + F7. I always had the message that the installer had crashed and the message of the bug report was that it was not an Ubuntu package. I checked the MD5 sums and they matched. I then tried to reinstall immediately WattOS after the bug report and when the screen asking me what install I would do I had the choice of installing WattOS next to Ubuntu 16.04 !!! I opted for that one and then the window announcing that the installation completed successfully became frozen. I had to power off the virtual machine and then I could reboot and it went OK.
I think the scripts included in the iso should be revised. There are too many bugs and I am convinced that a newbie would not be able to cope with these problems.
Otherwise it is light and has enough stuff for the people who are mainly surfing on the web.
I send you a text file of /var/log/installer/debug in attachment.
Best regards,
Pourpier

Thanks for reporting this pourpier. Sorry to hear about all your troubles. When I installed the LXDE 32 bit version in Virtualbox on my Windows machine I encountered no problems. I used direct download to get the iso.

Can you please add some further information? Such as what do you run on your host machine? Was it the latest version of Virtualbox? Which version of wattOS 10 did you try to install? Did you use torrent or direct download? Did you retry the process with a new download? How did it behave "live"? Did you try to run it in live mode on your computer?

These things might be of interest and importance if others encounter similar problems. Thanks for your cooperation. :)

Today I tried to install the LXDE 32 bit R10 version in Virtualbox. I had the exact same problems as pourpier. Host machine were W10, Virtualbox were upgraded to latest version. I just wanted to check it, so maybe my recollection of installing it into Virtualbox earlier were wrong. Suddenly I am not so sure.

Did install it to an external ssd in back September that worked very well with my eeepc. The live version worked as normal today when i tried it with my eeepc. Did not try to install it though. If I got time tomorrow I might throw it onto my external ssd just for fun. :D

Decided to try once more. After the graphic problem was resolved by what pourpier wrote above I started the installation. Everything went well. I choose not to upgrade during the install, and said yes to all the default choices from the installer. No crash message. On the last installation screen when I choose to reboot everything froze for me too. Powered it off.

When I rebooted, it booted into the live iso again. Rebooted, and now after a rather slow boot, even for Virtualbox, it worked. Started a terminal and upgraded. Rebooted again and this time it were at a normal Vbox speed. Everything is looking normal and things seem to work as they are supposed to do.

Just so that there are no misunderstanding. This was the 32 bit LXDE R10 of wattOS.

Installed R10 LXDE 32 bit to external ssd. The iso were from a direct download, from the wattOS homepage. I used the dd method to write it to usb. Now I can move it around between different pcs and take it with me when travelling. Could have made a dual boot of course, but by some inexplicable reason I am not a fan of dual booting.

Did not encounter any problems. :)

Hello Blaze !
Try to install VLC or LibreOffice either from the cli or from Synaptic and tell me the problems you may encounter. Have fun !

VLC and LibreOffice are very common programs and plenty of people would like to have them installed. On Lubuntu 16.10 these programs are not installed by default but if you install them either with the cli or with Synaptic there are no problems at all.
So if a newbie is interested in those programs and has WattOS as his OS he is going to be frustrated. This is not ideal. The programs people frequently want to install should be available without any problem. I can understand and accept you are unable to install a rare or weird program but not the two aforementioned.
Now, if you spend time on Google there is a solution for both of them but you cannot ask a newbie to do that. "Simple" programs should be simple to install.
What do you think ?
Best regards,

Thanks a lot for the solution. I had another way of doing it but yours is better because it stays with the official repos. I added a PPA for VLC and I downloaded a tarball from the official site of LibreOffice. I extracted what was in the tarball. I changed the directory to go in the DEBS folder and I used dpkg -i for all the .deb files in the DEBS folder.
VLC and LibreOffice are now installed and run fine.
But for a newbie I have serious doubts.
Anyway I'm going to edit the post as solved.
Best regards,
pourpier
