I still like Debian, but maybe based on the testing version?

I do like LXLE, but it's based on Lubuntu 12.04 for i386.

Hmm, maybe for ppc too? I have access to some old Emacs....

If you don't want to use the screensaver, you could uninstall it or set the blank time longer.

When I looked up your computer, I found these installed: Dell 1470 Internal Wireless 802.11a/b/g and Integrated Network Card (ethernet). You should have drivers for those in wattOS R8 install cd. You can always reinstall and make sure to connect to the internet first, before installing.

If this is a new install, click reload in synaptic and mark all upgrades then apply. Then retry your install of gimp.
