How much significance the hardware specs have I do not know. Guess you just have to take a chance and try one out. But what is it going to be used to, easy use with some writing, surfing, mail, checking the latest news? Or something particular?

Yes, just with google search. Tested again with small variations. Right now with Iceweasel, two tabs open, youtube startpage and this forum, gives ca 275mb. 

Is there anything of interest in /var/log/syslog? What happens if you shutdown from the terminal?

How much hd space an install take I do not know, but with a hd of 40gb no worry. Just install the office applications if they not are included, Spanish is no problem. You should really try out both lxde and mate live to see what works best for you. Then decide what to install. 

Tried another upgrade in vbox, apt did disagree with me  Decided to have a look at the lxde release in vbox too, really nice. So nice that I just might give the 64 bit a try on my desktop later. Enabled the openbox menu in the lxde session to get to the most used applications faster. Wanted also to give microwatt yet another try in vbox, a couple of things that I forgot to check out. And the lesson learned from all this back and forth is that the installer really works like a charm.
