General Discussion / Something funny I experienced
« on: September 19, 2018, 07:10:25 AM »
So at the foundation I work at an investment was made for new computer systems.

As with anyone who 'thinks' they act more professional, Windows 10, 8GB memory, SSD drives, systems were bought, laptops and PC's. I was given the freedom of installing them myself (as to disable Cortana and block its traffic as well as other stuff that comes with Windows 10.) Office 2016/365 installed everywhere.. Naturally I did all that is needed according to the EU GDPR laws: Encrypting the entire drive, etc. And all works well.

Until my boss noticed I am still using an old Dell Optiplex 760 580 with 4gb ram and a good ol' 500GB sata drive running WattOS-MicroWatt R10. He asked why I, as sysadmin, did not get a new computer. I told him I didn't need one. I ran Chromium browser and opened about eight tabs, of which four were of the office365 page (I apologize), Wordpress Admin to our website and some other sites, I opened Libreoffice Write as well as the shell to connect to the webserver and I already had uVNC running to support someone. I explained to him that this was all I needed. I showed him the system really didn't slow down at all. Worked like a charm.

He cursed at me about the expenses he made, thousands of Euro's spent on expensive new systems and I just proven him that really wasn't needed. I told him it was needed though... (to make him feel better) but next time he really should have listened to me. I do intend to get a few of those old systems for myself at home for testing purposes.

And yes, I do realize that sometimes it's better to just get on with it and buy a new computer, at home I too got a new computer a while ago. But it's still fun to experience a situation like this.

But it did make me laugh when I was out of hearing-range of him. But did any of you ever experienced something like this? It happened yesterday.

Correction: It is a 580, not 760 lol. But the question remains.

General Discussion / WattOS Community OS
« on: September 19, 2018, 06:26:02 AM »
So I have a question.

Why isn't WattOS a community OS? The reason I am asking is we all rely on one person only while there are many who are like minded in keeping WattOS as it is and as it should be. A good communication system and list of What To and What Not could never hurt in this as to keep communications going.

WattOS is a great great product and I love it dearly and I certainly do not want to go against Biffster or even think of taking this project away from him. Just a question.

Regards,
Charlie. :D

I use Firefox and Chrome. The latter because my job demands this for some obscure reason and Firefox because I am trying to be wise.

On the side: I am doing the illogical thing of using a 'hosts file' (Steven Black) on my phone to avoid a lot of nasty crap.

Thanks for the information. WattOS won't be modified other than the usual installations, nor would it be sold. For both it's basically office computer related.

General Discussion / WattOS at organisation and/or company

Before I continue to proceed, I wanted to ask the question on whether it's allowed for me to use WattOS at the non-profit organization I am working for currently.

Also on behalf of a friend if it's allowed to be used in a (small) company as a replacement for his work computer (Windows install where all he needs is Firefox) as we are unsure how licencing works and all.

It's been a while. Haven't had the time to game the big games.. but I actually decided to get my hands on terminal games like Pacman4Console, nSnake which I am trying out. I find them eerily calming. ^_^

wattOS R10 / Appreciation
« on: May 09, 2017, 10:09:41 PM »
Just wanted to show my appreciation through this message in regards to WattOS R10 Micro (i3). I've never had a much more stable system running an OS. So kudo's to Biff! It really made me learn a lot about Linux in general.

So no question or anything, just a positive comment.

Hah, I see.

In my mind i3 is ´from´ WattOS and it keeps slipping my mind that it's a separate entity. I still have to get used to not searching for "WattOS How to do ... " but instead create separate searches.

Got it. Thanks. ^_^

wattOS R10 / Transparency

So I have been looking around but can not really find the answer to the following. Most likely I did not look at the right places. The Wiki did not help either unfortunately.

How can I make the terminals in i3 transparent so I can see the background image through them?

Looking up what PlayOnLinux is made me hooked due to one game that now actually runs.. TES Morrowind GOTY. wow.

I'll look into the emulators soon.

But I must say that I was also surprised that my Logitech gamepad works without needing to install anything. All buttons work as they should. I tested that in Shadow Man, and wow.

I remember Mario Kart from the SNES.. and now I remember F-Zero as well. I'll be making some time to properly game soon!

I do remember that in ye olden times the ZSNES allowed for online gaming (multiplayer through LAN). Is that still the case with some of the emulators?

Aw man.. looking at the NES/SNES/N64 made me relive some of those days. Faxanadu (NES), Lufia II (SNES, etc. Awesome games back then on the consoles.

Just wondering.. What type of games, when one has the time to play those, do all play using WattOS/Wine?

For me that's mostly the oldschool games as I mentioned in other topics.

- Red Alert II Yuri's Revenge
- Diablo II Lord of Destruction
- As of today also Shadow Man (with retexture pack)
- As of today also some old DosBOX/MS Dos games.

Again, only when one has the time.. real life tends to catch up a lot for all of us.
