wattOS R10 / Re: Choice between LXDE and Openbox desktop
« on: November 09, 2017, 08:35:27 PM »
Welcome to wattOS,
Openbox is a window manager, not a full desktop environemnt.  So, minimal bells and whistles.
If you really want to work with this then try here :  http://openbox.org/wiki/Help:Getting_started
There are other links beside the page I've quoted which will give you a detailed intro, if working via Openbox appeals to you.

@veggie
If you want to use R10 but need that default changed, you might look at this :

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/42746/how-can-i-take-a-screenshot-in-lxde-using-scrot-and-the-print-screen-button-on-m

It looks to me as if scrot config is in the file noted, so any change to add the "file location prompt" could be there too.

If you are using microwatt, then you should got to the i3 FAQ.

General Discussion / Re: WattOS at organisation and/or company
« on: May 24, 2017, 02:28:10 AM »
Short answers : yes and yes
Longer answers : there is no licence-based limitation on place of use, neither in not-for-profit nor in for-profit organisations.   You do not need activation nor "authenticity checks" as with some other OSes.
The limitations are that you can't sell the code as a product, and if you modify the code (which IS permitted) then any modifications have the same licence as the original.   Your intended uses are no different to installing and using in your own home.
This link discusses the issues - some of the discussion is not helpful, but in general it covers a lot of the territory :
https://opensource.stackexchange.com/questions/1399/can-gpl-licenced-software-be-used-in-corporate-environments
And if you do become keen to modify the code then you can read great detail regarding the GPL licensing in the FAQ at the Free Software Foundation website.

I'll leave any finer points to someone else    :-)

wattOS R10 / Re: What is the "MOD" key?
« on: January 11, 2017, 09:03:46 AM »
This is vague recollection, since you don't seem to be making any usable progress.

Biff made a video for the first i3wm microwatt.   Updated it, I think, for R10.    I'm pretty sure that he covers - later stages, perhaps -  the fact that config is all in an editable text file.   I do realise that you want to allocate the MOD key itself given that none of the existing key functions that way, as opposed to binding mod+key combinations.   I say start with the video.
Depending on your typing habits, consider a right-ctrl key as mod .

Good luck - after this amount of effort you deserve it.

wattOS Talk / Re: Broadcom link help thread
« on: November 23, 2016, 04:07:27 AM »
Good idea Blaze.
Since Broadcom has just been sold, and the IoT part of the business has gone to Cypress
 (as in  http://www.cypress.com/news/cypress-acquire-broadcom-s-wireless-internet-things-business-0 )
Cypress has chosen to release specs/datasheets of Broadcom chips.
Whether this improves the coverage and simplicity of coping with Broadcom wifi remains to be seen, but we can all hope   :-)

General Discussion / Re: Taking wattOS everywhere I go...
« on: September 06, 2016, 02:00:06 AM »
Wow, the whole story !
Thanks, Dan - explanatory and empirical.
I read an article somewhere which reckoned that with "large" RAM and "small" Linux demands  the swap space was rarely used, and Linux would survive well without it.     Large/small are not absolutes, obviously, and growth in applications might cause a rethink on that.     Your low-demand use probably fits well with that "no swap" logic.
Again, thanks.

And for the rest of us .....
If the firewall is to work then it must be turned on.
Everyone but Dan did that, right ?     Hmmmm, a big silence there.

Thanks for the reminder, Dan.    :)

Pretty impressive, Dan.
I can understand setting "don't use" for the swap space, but thought the reason was to prevent porta-watt2 looking for sda5 on boot  ie to make it independent of the current box.
What happens when you boot the Debian 8.5 install ?  Swap space gone or untouched ?

wattOS R10 / Re: Cannot add network printer
« on: September 04, 2016, 09:15:29 AM »
IIRC (which isn't guaranteed)   HP provide a utility called  hplip  for installing printers under Linux.
I'd look in the repos for hplip, or try HP's website.     For an HP printer, that is.

I also support cheiron's comment .... sometime Samsung printers are a trivial install, but often a visit to the maker's website gets the best or only result.

@Dan
Perhaps Biff has made a significant change, as you mooted ..... this text from the FAQ :
The current wattOS build is based upon i3 window manager and LXDE to provide a friendly but fast user interface .........................

No mention of Openbox, even for the mainstream LXDE edition.

wattOS R10 / Re: wattOS-R10 and the Mouse who slept
« on: September 03, 2016, 12:38:38 PM »
MUCH better than my notes, Biff.

UNchecking runtime-pm would, I assume, affect other devices too.  I speculate that it might improve network performance for some users, which would be a nice side effect.  Are there any negative consequences, potential or inevitable, which might push users to the more detailed solution .... among the weeds, as you put it ?    I'm guessing that printers, scanners and the like go to low-power at their own behest; what of HDDs and other internal devices ?  Or LAN polling, for that matter.
Anything that might chew up enough cpu or power (whence heat) to become noticeable on a modest machine ?

Looked at another way, what benefit do those using a ps2 mouse or compliant usb meese get over  those who make this change out of necessity ?

wattOS R10 / Re: System Error dialog shows a Linux Mint icon

Interesting catch; an Ubuntu icon would be understandable, but a Mint icon ?
Ah, FOSS     :)

btw, nice to see you back Hinto

wattOS R10 / Re: Intermittant USB Mouse Availability?
« on: September 02, 2016, 12:44:43 PM »
Perhaps it's related to the usb-autosuspend feature of "laptop tools", in essence a power-saving feature.
You could find usb_autosuspend.conf (or something similar) and toggle that feature to off.

If you want to retain power-saving generally, but address the usb mouse issue, then try this :
  http://www.hecticgeek.com/2012/06/fix-usb-mouse-not-working-laptop-mode-tools-ubuntu/
It's a vintage solution, so there's a chance the relevant config file has changed.  For example, in
 http://askubuntu.com/questions/80638/how-to-disable-auto-power-off-of-usb-devices-like-usb-mouse
one user noted "At least in Ubuntu 15.04, this file has been moved to runtime-pm.conf and the line to add the id to is now called AUTOSUSPEND_RUNTIME_DEVID_BLACKLIST="". Strangely, I couldn't get my blacklist to work so I just disabled this module by setting CONTROL_RUNTIME_AUTOSUSPEND=0. "

Or you could keep your hands clean and wait for Biff's notes   ;D

For those new to wattOS, in earlier releases some issues on laptops were found to "magically" disappear when laptop-tools was installed, and not solely power issues IIRC.   So IMO electing to uninstall laptop-tools would represent a risky option.
