wattOS R8 / "Oops" during power down - should I report as a bug?
« on: June 22, 2014, 06:40:53 AM »
hi wattOS r8 is currently failing during power down. This does not seem to cause any real problems, as I can use the power button and nothing seems borken when I start again.

The message it shows is

[FAIL] startpar: services returned failure: fnfxd ... failed

and it then sits there showing that message till I press the physical power button.

Should I report this as a bug? And if so, where is the bug report facility, please?

And how do I access the rest of the closedown messages when I log on again - there is a traceback just above the line I quoted, which might be of use to someone if I do post a bug.

Many thanks, this is still a bit clunky at the monent (at least on this machine) but I'm quite enthusiastic about the changeover to Debian so I am happy to give any feedback that will help the tekkies "de-cunk" it a bit.

wattOS R8 / Re: watt OS ignores wifi hardware & settings
« on: June 22, 2014, 06:33:48 AM »
found these lines in dmesg -- looks like the firmware loading is failing both for the graphics and the wifi. In the case of the graphics wattOS successfully works around the problem, but for the wifi it doesn't.

Are the two firmware load failures connected, d'you think? Or is it just coincidence.

Any ideas, or is this time to report this as a bug?

wattOS R8 / Re: watt OS ignores wifi hardware & settings
« on: June 21, 2014, 08:23:36 PM »
ifconfig only mentions lo and eth0

iwconfig says

lo         no wireless extensions
eth0    no wireless extensions

the relevant line of  output from lspci says

02:03.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter (rev 04)

It looks to me as if wattOS is simply ignoring the wifi interface - Is the problem that wattOS does  not have the right drivers/firmware or kernel support for this wireless adaptor?

Lubuntu works fine, by the way, and in my past experience Debian is usually better than Ubuntu at covering old hardware.

wattOS R8 / watt OS ignores wifi hardware & settings
« on: June 21, 2014, 07:05:05 PM »
hi, I have installed wattOS r8 on this laptop, and it works fine with ethernet.

I right-clicked on the networking icon in the system tray and filled in the SSID and password for the wifi, but cannot find out how to make wattOS take any notice of it. The info I put in persists after a reboot, so I know it is storing it, but how do I get it to actually try using the wifi when I turn the laptop on?

Many thanks

wattOS R8 / Re: creating live USB from Ubuntu
« on: June 21, 2014, 06:29:48 PM »
hi again,

this method was NEARLY right

1. (assuming the iso is already hybrid)

umount /dev/sdb1
dd if=wattOS-R8-LXDE32.iso of=/dev/sdb1

only it should have been

umount /dev/sdb1
dd if=wattOS-R8-LXDE32.iso of=/dev/sdb

In other words, we un mount the partition but write to the entire disk, as a hybrid iso already has a partition table built in...

wattOS R8 / creating wattOS live USB using *ubuntu [SOLVED]
« on: June 21, 2014, 05:14:54 PM »
hi,
I am not even getting started here. This laptop is an ideal candidate for WattOS, it is of WinXP vintage but now runs Puppy and Lubuntu. I wanted to install WattOS r8 from a USB stick but the usual procedure seems not to work.

This is what I have tried, both from within sudo -i (ie effectively as root). And yes, I have done the obvious and checked the MD5 and tried more than one USB stick. And yes the stick is /dev/sdb1 (checked before the umount)

1. (assuming the iso is already hybrid)

umount /dev/sdb1
dd if=wattOS-R8-LXDE32.iso of=/dev/sdb1

2. (assuming it is not)

umount /dev/sdb1
cp wattOS-R8-LXDE32.iso wattOS-R8-LXDE32-HYBRID.iso
isohybrid wattOS-R8-LXDE32-HYBRID.iso
dd if=wattOS-R8-LXDE32.iso-HYBRID of=/dev/sdb1

In both cases the BIOS says "missing Operating System" when I select the option to boot from USB. Boot from USB has worked before. I can understand the Lubuntu isohybrid command failing to do the right thing, because the kernel is in a different place on a Debian install disk as compared to a Ubuntu one, but what is the right comment to use, please?

Can I mount the iso and use a command line utility from the iso to correctly write it to USB?

Any other, advice, please, that does not involve using Windo$e to create the USB stick from the ISO, and that does not involve a physical CDROM, neither of which this laptop has any more

best regards,
River~~
