How they got check marks, I don't know...

After more investigation, I figured out how the check marks got placed on those Independent sources. The tool that I used to make backup ISOs of my systems placed them there.

AH HA! Found the culprit(s)...

I'll spare the details, but after comparing my reinstalled 32bit with the 64bit (which I had not yet reinstalled), I could find only one difference...

I looked at the Software and Updates application, and under the Other Software tab on the 64bit, there were check marks next to both Independent sources. They weren't checked on the reinstalled 32bit.

How they got check marks, I don't know...

I removed the check marks, ran an update, and no error message any longer.  ;D

I don't know if this is the proper, perfect, or textbook fix...but it worked.  ;)

Tips and Tricks / Re: How to vastly improve font rendering on WINE.

Here are a couple of links that will allow you to install the .deb package with your GDebi Package Installer instead of using the PPA. I would still recommend reading the article in the OP, because there are a couple of configuration tips that you can still use even without installing through the PPA.

The first link is to the actual page; on which, you can find the .deb package if you're used to finding things on Launchpad.

https://launchpad.net/~no1wantdthisname/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+packages

If you're not used to finding .deb packages on Launchpad, clicking the following link will automatically download the package in your browser...

https://launchpad.net/~no1wantdthisname/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+files/fontconfig-infinality_20130104-0ubuntu0ppa1_all.deb

I've reinstalled, and have installed all updates. The error hasn't reappeared.

Whether the error was truly related to the PPA that I installed for the improved font rendering on WINE...I don't know. However, after seeing the difference it made in the fonts, I searched around until I found a .deb package for it instead of using the PPA. I've installed the .deb package, and I'm getting the same results with the font rendering.  :D

Neither am I getting the sources error with the .deb package as I was with the PPA either. I will make links to the .deb package in the thread for improving font rendering on WINE.

Again, I don't know for sure if that PPA was the culprit, but I am highly suspicious.

From what I've read, this is a common Ubuntu error.

It comes from having too many extra sources from what I understand. That's just it though, I don't have a lot of extra sources. I only have 2 or 3 extra above what came stock.

Anyway, I think the offending source was related to the recent fix I installed for fonts in WINE. That was the only source in the trusted.gpd.d folder ...

Anyway, I've tried some of the fixes that I've found online...to no avail. I keep my system pretty bare, so I think I'll just reinstall. Getting that error will drive me crazy.  ;D ;D ;D

Okay, I commented that source out and ran sudo apt-get update...and the source in question appeared in the terminal during the update...

Hit http://us.archive.ubuntu.com trusty Release.gpg
Hit http://us.archive.ubuntu.com trusty Release

I went back and enabled the source that I commented out...wonder why I can't find that trusty Release source?

Has anyone else been receiving the following error message...

W: GPG error: http://extras.ubuntu.com trusty Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 16126D3A3E5C1192

I've looked through my sources.list, but can't find a source by that exact name. The closest I have is...

## This software is not part of Ubuntu, but is offered by third-party
## developers who want to ship their latest software.
deb http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty main
deb-src http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty main

I'm going to comment that source out and see what effect it has.

That makes sense considering the man behind Vivaldi is who was originally the developer of Opera. I remember how happy I was when I finally figured out how to change that orange color on Vivaldi.  ;D

Speaking of Opera, I've read a couple of articles lately that said Linux users could watch Netflix and Amazon Prime on Opera. Sounded good for 32bit users since Chrome is dropping 32bit. So I installed the latest stable 32bit Opera...neither Netflix or Amazon Prime worked. I then tried the latest Opera Beta build...they didn't work on it either.

Out of curiosity, I tried Xombrero. A very basic browser with security features built in. When it opens, all you see is basically a basic start page with an address bar. I think keyboard shortcuts are used for opening new tabs and such. When I first opened it, it was only using 68 MB of RAM. I thought that was great; however, after about 5 minutes, it was up to almost 500 MB. Might have been because I didn't take the time to learn how to use it properly...

Thanks teejay.

I've received a reply from the Slimjet forum's site administrator...32bit Linux will continue to be supported for the foreseeable future.

Well, I can only speak from my own experience...

I no longer have Chromium or Chrome on my 32bit computer; however, when I did have Chrome and started receiving the message that it would no longer be supported, I removed Chrome and installed Chromium. I didn't get the message while using Chromium.

I joined their forum to ask...

There was already a short thread addressing the future of the 32bit version http://www.slimjet.com/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=736

However, it wasn't answered by a developer, so I did what shouldn't be done...I started a new thread and asked again.  :-[  http://www.slimjet.com/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=876

Tips and Tricks / How to vastly improve font rendering on WINE.
« on: March 12, 2016, 02:06:14 PM »

I've found an even easier and faster method than what's described here in the next few posts. Scroll down a few posts to find it. I'll mark it in large letters as NEW METHOD!

I use WINE for a few things, and though it works great, the font rendering leaves little to be desired. I've tried various "How to" fixes, but none that I tried were very successful.  :P

I finally found the fix, and it's absolutely perfect...and easy!

The article is from 2013, but it still applies today (3-12-2016). Just a few terminal commands, log out and log back in, and BAM!  :D

It not only made the fonts in WINE look great, but it seems to have made all of the fonts system-wide look better too. Took less than 3 minutes to fix the fonts that I've tried to fix for years... :o

Here's the link to the article...I would recommend not using the PPA given in the article (due to some problems that I personally experienced after adding the PPA). There are links to a .deb package in the next post, which will allow you to install the package with the GDebi Package Installer rather than using the PPA.

SlimJet does indeed use less RAM than Firefox! WOW!

Thanks again leenie!

That's a good point about whether they'll continue supporting 32bit...I'll look over their site again, and see if there's anything about it. If not, I might try contacting them and ask.

Wow...based on Chromium but lighter than Firefox?  I just looked at their website, and I think I'll be installing this tomorrow. Thanks for reminding me about SlimJet leenie!

Has anyone tried Vivaldi lately? I did about a year ago (or more). I liked it okay, but there were no plugins for it at the time...though some people said that they were using a couple of plugins from the Chrome store. I could never get any to work. It was also resource hungry. Just wondering how it has come along since then.
