Hi - I am trying to install a Dell 720 printer in R10 on a 64 bit PC.. I have followed the directions I have found elsewhere on the web, which state to install libstdc++5 for 64 and 32 and the lexmark z600 driver. I was able to install this on Zorin 12.04 on a 32 bit PC. What happens now is I install it succesfully, but when I try to print, it gives a message of "stopped".
Any suggestions?

Printers can be a real pain in a certain place. I see that there are quite a lot of support requests about your printer. I included a link from Ubuntu forum from someone that says it should work. Have you done your driver install that way? Are you trying to print wireless, or cable?
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2333358
Have you read this, and tried the "localhost:631" method? See under "Adding a printer".

Hi Zak, install cups and try again.
-
Hi leenie and blaze and thanks for responding!
Leenie - yes, CUPS is installed.
Blaze - I had seen that post in the first link and had attempt to install libcupsimage2 (386), but I received an error message in GDebi and gave up. So, tonight, I triied it with dpkg in Terminal, and received messages that it was not able to be installed because of dependencies with libcups2 and libcupsfilters. When i tried to install libcups2, I get 4 dependencies....libavahi client 3 and common3, libgnutls30, and libgssapi-krb-2. I have a feeling this will keep going on and was wondering if you had any ideas
-
Sorry Zak, no more ideas here. :-\ A couple of years back when I were setting up my printer, I remember that I had to install the dependency of the dependency of the dependency to get it to work. Do not have a clue if that is your case. Just wish you good luck with it. :)
-
Thanks Blaze.
This morning I woke up thinking about Leenie's response. I have Cups installed, but not 386 Cups. I will do some research on that and see if that might have these other files.....
-
Hi Zak, hope it works.
-
Hey leenie and blaze -
I did a lot of work last night installing dependencies and got the printer to work. In hind-sight, I don't think I needed to install as much as I did, but will test that another time. Here is my dilemma - I turned on the computer and can't login. I am not hugely surprised as I figured I would probably muck something up with all of that package installation. When I go to Recovery in Grub, I chose DPKG to check broken dependencies and found that it wants to remove multiarch-support:i386 and install multiarch-support. When I approve for it to go ahead, it says "Could not download the upgrades. The upgrade has aborted." Then it talks about checking the internet connection (which was fine last night) or installation media. "Failed to fetch htt'://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/ main/g/glibc/multiarch-support_2.23-0ubuntu3.amd64.deb. Temporary failure resolving 'us.archive.ubuntu.com'.
I realize this is beyond the original question, but you both seem knowledgeable and it didn't seem right to start another thread here.
-
update - just tried to ping 8.8.8.8 and got connect:Network is unreachable.
i
Really would rather not do an install. Any thoughts or should I take this to the Ubuntu forum as it is now off-topic?
-
quick question...
on your copy paste.. you have "htt':// and not http:// <-- is that actual copy paste or just a slip with your typing ?
-
Hey Cheiron - thanks for checking this out. I didn't copy and paste as I was typing on a different computer than where the problem is. So....it was a typo.
Any thoughts?
-
Initial thoughts are try a different server from the drop down menu. There are 2 servers if memory serves me right. . You could try swapping and seeing if that helps
-
Hi Cheiron - by "drop-down menu" do you mean the GRUB recovery choices?
-
In software updater from main screen. You will have options for Ubuntu software. . Other software. . Updates... authentication. .. etc.
On the Ubuntu software bit there should be a part saying. ..
Download from. That will either have main server or server for United States showing. There is a drop down box there to swap.
It might help.. might not... I've had to swap a few times before on occasion but then I'm not sure what I was trying to do at the time
-
Hi Cheiron -
right now, I can't login. Just the GRUB choices. If I chose the WattOS, I get a black screen. If I choose Recovery, I have other choices, but don't have much experience with Recovery. The details of what I have tried and the result are above.
-
Hi Zak
oh... my bad!
Best wait for Blaze or one of the others to walk you through the recovery. They should be on soon
-
Oh dear, things are getting messy ;)
What happened, what did you do in the session prior to the boot problems?
Try with the recovery option, and when you reach the recovery menu, try the top choice first.
-
Hey Blaze -
yes, messy....but fun! I had installed a bunch of packages to try to get cups installed. It is saying that the multiarch is an issue, but cant get connected to fix that. Do you think resolving that would help?
I am pretty sure I tried the first option...that is log in like usual, right? If so, I got a black screen.
-
You can check the boot log to see if anything sticks out. Possibly a long shot, but worth a try.
Recovery menu, go to root option, and when there do;
nano /var/log/boot.log
-
Sorry forgot about this yesterday. The output from "journalctl" is massive, but with an option it is not so much.
http://askubuntu.com/questions/763638/no-more-boot-logging-since-16-04
You do have a backup of important stuff?
-
Hey Blaze -
when I do the nano /var/log/boot.log, the first FAILED I see is with Failed to start Show Plymouth Boot Screen. See 'systemctl status plymouth-start.service' for details. Then I get another line of that. Then everything is OK until the end. The end says Starting Terminate Plymouth Boot Screen......Starting Hold until boot process finishes up......
I will go try to figure out the journalctl command now...
-
I am making progress! After a couple more reboots, I was able to run the dpkg and fix the multi-arch situation. However, I still can't boot. I then ran dpkg again and it looks clear. I am now running journactl and it gets the following errors:
- kernal:[drm:radeon_init [radeon]] *ERROR* No UMS support in radeon module!
- kernal: blk_update_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
- kernal: ERROR @wl_clfg80211_detach : NULL ndev-> ieee80211ptr, unable to deref wil
- NetworkMnager[834]:nm_device-get-device-type: assertion 'NM_IS_Device (self)' failedl
- systemd-hostnamed{846}:Failed to run event loop: Transport endpoint is not connected

Hi Zak,
I just looked in synaptic and just plain "cups" is not installed in my wattOS R10. My Canon printer did not work until I installed it. You will either have to reinstall or maybe boot repair will work to get you going again: https://sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair-cd/home/Home/
-
Just did the Boot Repair and here is the result https://paste.ubuntu.com/23849749/. It looks like the problem is with this line:
lspci: Unable to load libkmod resources: error -12
I will do some more research. Please let me know if anyone has any thoughts.
Thanks!
-
I do not have anything about libkmod at the moment, but I hope you are having progress Zak. :)
Please take a look at line 745. About something called "FlexNet" ?
-
Hi Zak,
Did your puter boot? If so, just what wireless do you have? Just like blaze, I want to know more about that FlexNet. I did search and it seems a sort of invasive type program: https://www.flexerasoftware.com/producer/products/software-monetization/flexnet-connect/
Hope you don't have to have it.
-
Hi Blaze and Leenie -
I had seen that FlexNet was detected while I was doing the BootRepair and it seemed like it wouldn't be a big deal (it appears to be a component of Adobe and some other Windows software) After your questions about it, I am now doing a little digging and finding good info like https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1661254 (https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1661254) and https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1976158 (https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1976158).
I have not been successful booting yet, but planning on trying some of the things in these links and will post back. It is weird how the Flexnet thing got in there as I have been booting fine for a while and don't use Windows. And this was a clean install...
More soon and Thank you!
-
Great work Zak! Thank you for interesting links. :)
Personally I would reinstall now. But that is lazy me. ;D
-
Hey Blaze....yes, I am getting close to reinstalling. Right now, it is about the journey and not the destination. However, I am wanting to move on as well.
Did another Boot-Repair with the option to fix that flexnet and it gave me another https://paste.ubuntu.com/23853980/ (https://paste.ubuntu.com/23853980/) and still no boot.
Looking more into the lspci: Unable to load libkmod resources: error -12 message as that is still there and I might be booting just fine and just not seeing that I am at the log-in screen....
-
On second thought, I think I have taken enough of both of your time. I will go ahead an reinstall as I think that will be cleaner anyway with all of the packages I had installed for the printer. I am going to not close this yet, though, as I am hoping to be able to offer info on installing the Dell Printer once I get that figured out.
-
Hey Blaze and Leenie - I have reinstalled and am beginning the process of trying to get the 720 working. One thing I did last time that may have contributed to the problem is, in order to install the 32 bit libstdc++ 5 and libcupsimage2, I need to install some i386 version of dependencies. I just installed libgnutls30:i386 and it is in the process of removing most of the applications on my system. I did this before, but didn't realize this was the culprit, did a reinstall, and that was where I started with you guys. So, this will be another re-install. :-[ I no longer have Synaptic or gdebi. Just tried to install Synaptic, but it has a lot of dependencies of files that were removed. Two, glib-networking-services, and glib-networking-common are already installed, but it is still telling me they are dependencies. All the applications have been removed except for KeyPass, Image Magick, Laptop Mode Tools config, and Root File manager.
So, my questions are:
1) Any idea why libgnutls30:i386 caused all of the applications to be removed?
2) How do I install libcupsimage2:i386 when it depends on libgnutls30:i386? Is this just not possible and should I run a 32 bit OS?
3) When I run sudo apt-get -f install, I get a long list of packages that were automatically installed and are no longer required. And, I am getting messages about held broken packages. Not a question...just info.
4) Is there a site or book you would recommend for me to learn about these things other than bugging you guys and trial and error?
Loving the learning process......thanks for any thoughts.
-
There has got to be a way without the i386 stuff. I'll be looking after I get home from work and the local water hole. :D
-
Hi Zak, my thoughts. :)
Since it is a real hassle to get things working, and it is important to get the printer up and running, you answered it yourself in #2. I would try with 32 bit. But then again I am a bit lazy, and do not like too much complications. :D
One question though, is it important for you to run 64bit? If yes, why? :)

Hi Blaze - I think my only concern with the 32 bit is whether it will see all the RAM (4GB) and whether it will run as fast and efficiently on 32 bit.. I have compared the machine using the 64 bit watt install and a 32 bit liveCD and it appeared to be about the same. Any thoughts on this?
-
I had 32 bit install on an old Dell Dimension 4700. It did see all the ram. See this: http://askubuntu.com/questions/272873/what-is-the-maximum-amount-of-ram-that-ubuntu-32-bit-supports
-
Do you do any real heavy lifting with your pc? If no, my guess is that you would do just as good with 32bit. You could try for a couple of weeks, if it does not work, backup and go for 64bit. Link below to some general thoughts on the subject, there are plenty of them to read. Google away! :)

-
32 bit support is 4GB Ram minus address space reservation. If you're pc supports PAE, then it "is" possible under certain conditions (pc, kernel, os) to use up to 32GB ram in 32bit via PAE :)
Other thing to remember with ram.. is its ram minus onboard graphics if being used.
-
Hey guys! I am now on 32bit Watt and up and running with printer AND keyboard. It was very easy to install the printer with the 32 bit. Now I just gotta get some ink.... ;)
I installed the following to get it to work:
1) Cups
2) libstdc++5
3) lexmark.z600-0.4.deb
Thank you so much for all your time and patience.
Zak

Glad to hear you're up and good :)
