I wish to install a parallel port printer. however when I try to use the add a printer window neither lpt #1 or serial port #1 appears on the selection list. can anyone tell why this is.

Not sure of your printer model or if your running microwatt or R9-LXDE, but I assume LXDE. I don't have a parallel printer to test as I am on the road, but the ubuntu wiki has some good steps to test parallel port printing here.

Also you can install the package hplip (sudo apt-get install hplip) or use synaptic and search for hplip adds a lot of that functionality to make your life easier.
