wattOS R10 / Re: [Solved] Cannot add network printer
« on: October 16, 2016, 11:30:50 AM »
I have a brother printer-scanner, model  DCP-195C.

There is a script on the brother-website which works well. It installs the printer drivers as well as the scanner drivers.
On a 64-bit system and Ubuntu 12 or 14 upwards, the user must copy some files from usr/lib64 to usr/lib , then printer and scanner works fine.

But problems with this routine started yesterday with wattOS and Ubuntu Mate 12.10 .
The routine installation did not work anymore.

What a luck that I found this thread.

Dan gave the solution.
I installed cups with Synaptic , restarted, then ran the brother-script again ... and now printer and scanner functions work well.

Thanks to all, especially to Dan.

wattOS R10 / Re: Installer crashes (R10)
« on: October 15, 2016, 08:39:39 AM »
I used an app called "mint stick" or  "create live usb stick" which is part of Peppermint 7 and other distros.
With Ubuntu Mate 16.10 and every other distro I tested it, the installer works correct.

In the meanwhile I put whatOs R10 iso  on an usb-stick which has  multi-system installed on it.
http://liveusb.info/dotclear/index.php?pages/install
Strange enough. It installed without errors from the multi-system usb-stick. I am writing this posting from whatOS R10 .

Last time when I installed R10, I used the above mentioned create live usb stick  method and it worked.
It is a mystery which I cannot solve and since R10 is now installed, I forget about it and mark this thread as solved.

wattOS R10 / (Solved) Installer crashes (R10)
« on: October 15, 2016, 03:50:56 AM »
I tried to install wattOS R10 via Live-USB-stick to my PC (Dell Inspiron) yesterday but somewhere when it comes to the grub-installation, the installer crashes.

I downloaded a new copy of R10 and made a new USB-stick from it, but with the same result.
MD5-sum is correct, USB-stick creation is ok, it boots correctly .

Just to see if something on my USB-ports is wrong, I installed the new Ubuntu Mate 16.10 and it installed without an error.

Since there are no other error-messages than "sorry, the installer crashed. Do you want to send a report to somebody ?" I have no clue what the problem is and what to do.

General Discussion / Re: Taking wattOS everywhere I go...
« on: October 06, 2016, 07:08:06 PM »
Dan,
thanks again.  :)

It works.

I have whatOS R10  with LXDE desktop.
Will put the info about it and my PC in my signature, but first have to find out how to get the essential facts.
I know there are terminal commands for it and I know that there are apps, but first have to find and install them.

Thank you, Dan.

There I found instructions for starting PinguyBuilder from the Terminal.
I now have my whatOS on USB.
skype worked, firefox worked, only Opera did not load because of some authorization. I will re-install it when using the personal whatOS .

I saw screenshots of PinguyBuilder. Looks like there is a GUI. Maybe I will find somewhere how to start it.

Introductions / Hello from Germany
« on: October 06, 2016, 05:23:47 PM »
Hello to all members here.

Finding wattOS was accidental while testing several linux distributions on a linuxmintuser-forum where somebody mentioned  Peppermint-7.

So I searched for that and in their forum somebody mentioned wattOS  ----> now I am here.

My experience with Linux is similar to many.
Used only Windows for years, never learned the details, only did what everybody seems to do: screening for Virus, installing Firewalls (Zone alarm etc), then buying or testing the next Internet-Security software and looking for free software, never sure if it crashes the system.

I didn't dare to touch Linux for a long time.
Then Windows-8 came and then Windows-10 and that pushed me to Linux.

When I did, I stumbled over LinuxMint, installed it on my PC ... and messed up because something went wrong with "Root" or something I didn't understand.

So I began searching for that mysterious thing like "mounting Root" and mounting "home" and after many hours or days of searching I found that it is  a  "/" for Root in the installer and  "/home" for the home partition.

So you get the impression of how some people crash against a wall when touching Linux for the first time.
I know for sure that I am not alone in this.
Some find the "/" faster , some give up and return to Windows.

In the meanwhile I installed LinuxMint with different Desktops.
 Elementary, Debian, Ubuntu, Peppermint-7, Sparky and others.

Some were way too complicated for me like Mageia etc. and I gave up after a few hours.
Some I liked and kept them a bit longer.  8)

Right now Peppermint-7 and wattOS R10 are my top distros.

I could list reasons but basically it's about speed on my old PC ( Dell Inspiron 560 ) and Toshiba-Satellite Laptop.

Speed and knowing how to add a quick-launch icon to the Panel.  :D

Fast booting  ( wattOS seems to be a few seconds faster than P-7 , it needs about 25 seconds until the login-screen appears and after login it loads the desktop very fast) and fast shutdown.

The browser should load fast and surfing smooth.  Firefox is good, but with the standard addons I have, it needs more time to start than Opera does, therefore Opera is my default browser now.

For germans who are not able to basically understand english language like I do, wattOS is certainly not the choice. Ubuntu or Linux Mint is because they have german forums.

My english is not the best, but somehow enough to understand instructions, so I can stay with wattOS and the fine support I see happening here in the forum.  :)

Maybe you consider it silly, but one reason I might stick to whatOS is this forum.  ???
It just loads and navigates much faster than the P-7-forum does.
Such a minor thing is important, believe me.

Anyway.

Thanks to the developers of whatOS and all who support it.
You have done and are doing a great job.   :)

There are numerous websites explaining how to tweak Firefox preferences with about:config
Here is just 1 example
http://www.tweakguides.com/Firefox_10.html

For those who test distros, it is a hassle to tweak Firefox again and again in the new installed distro.

Here is a way to save this time by creating a file and copying it into every new Firefox installation once, restarting Firefox and there you go with all the tweaks.

Short instruction:

1.Create a text-file with leafpad or pluma or whatever file-manager you like.
Name it user.js

2. Insert the about:config settings into this  user.js  file.

3. Place the user.js  file into the profiles folder of Firefox.

4. Start / restart  Firefox.   Done

Here is the complete description for this excellent method:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/User.js_file

Here is a part of my user.js file to give you an idea how easy this method is:
Code: [Select]
// Geolocation API abschalten
user_pref("geo.enabled", false);
user_pref("geo.wifi.uri", "");
user_pref("browser.search.geoip.timeout", 1);

// WebRTC deaktivieren
user_pref("media.peerconnection.enabled", false);
user_pref("loop.enabled", false);

// WebGL deaktivieren
user_pref("webgl.disable-extensions", true);
user_pref("webgl.min_capability_mode", true);
user_pref("webgl.disable-fail-if-major-performance-caveat", true);
user_pref("webgl.disabled", true);

// Clipboard Events deaktivieren
user_pref("dom.event.clipboardevents.enabled", false);

wattOS R10 / Re: Installation of VPN fails on wattOS R10
« on: October 06, 2016, 12:20:54 AM »
Dan,
I have checked the Xenial Backports repository too, just in case ...
but didn't help.

I dared to install it in spite of all the security warnings like you did.
It worked and now I have my good old Bitmask running in wattOS too.

Thanks for your help.   :)

wattOS R10 / Re: wattOS-R10 and the Mouse who slept
« on: October 05, 2016, 10:21:25 PM »
Good news:
The  unchecking of that option did the job for my Dell-PC.
I was wondering about the "laptop" configuration menu because the USB-mouse stopped working on my PC, but since the fix worked I am happy.

Before I found this fix, I tested other distros. There the mouse worked fine.
Only wattOS R10 produced the dead mouse consistent.
I had to unplug it and plug it in again and for that session the mouse did work, but not after restart.

Thanks biffster to the solution.
If possible there is a fix for this "out of the box" ? somehow in the future ?

wattOS R10 / Re: Installation of VPN fails on wattOS R10

Dan,
checking that Recommended updates (xenial-updates) solved my problems with installing skype on wattOS, but unfortunately not with Bitmask.

Have to search further for a solution.

Here is the instruction for Bitmask from their website:
Code: [Select]
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus)
To install

sudo -s
add-apt-repository "deb http://deb.bitmask.net/debian xenial main"
wget -O- https://dl.bitmask.net/apt.key | apt-key add -
apt update
apt install bitmask leap-archive-keyring

Adding the repository works.
Now I will post the terminal return for the "wget" command
Code: [Select]
root@franz-Inspiron-560:~# wget -O- https://dl.bitmask.net/apt.key | apt-key add -
--2016-10-06 00:12:18--  https://dl.bitmask.net/apt.key
Resolving dl.bitmask.net (dl.bitmask.net)... 37.218.242.148
Connecting to dl.bitmask.net (dl.bitmask.net)|37.218.242.148|:443... connected.
ERROR: cannot verify dl.bitmask.net's certificate, issued by ‘CN=Let's Encrypt Authority X3,O=Let's Encrypt,C=US’:
  Unable to locally verify the issuer's authority.
To connect to dl.bitmask.net insecurely, use `--no-check-certificate'.
gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found.
root@franz-Inspiron-560:~#

Here I am stuck and lost.
Tried to somehow use "--no-check-certificate" and got only error-messages.

Dan,
just today I thought about having a live-linux-USB-stick with my personalized distro.

There is a "Pinguybuilder" something which does the job.
Only thing about it:  I have no idea how to use it.

Downloaded it from the author-website and installed it with GDebi , but it says it is installed already.
Yes, I see it in Synaptics.

But how to start and use it ?

VPN does work! This will be a big deal for those using public wi-fi.
Sorry leenie to rain on the parade.  :(
Opera free VPN does not work .... for me.

It goes off and on, most of the time it looses connection and this means that no website will load until the nasty "free VPN" in Opera manages to catch the connection again.

Unfortunately, Bitmask does not install in WattOS. I use Bitmask in all other distros I am testing ( Sparky, Peppermint 7, LMDE2 and some Linux Mint distros ), there it installs without any problems.

Looks like I'll have to use a non-free VPN as I did before. It worked great and cost me about 5 Dollars per month.

wattOS R10 / Re: Installation of VPN fails on wattOS R10
« on: October 05, 2016, 08:52:52 PM »
Thank you, Dan.

I am using Bitmask on all distros I am testing right now.
It delivers almost the same speed than the pure connection without Bitmask. I like it.

But unfortunately I cannot install it in WattOS R10.
Some nasty error-messages occur and it just does not install. No idea how to solve that.

I have tried some of the free VPN-addons in Firefox and Opera.
There are a lot of them nowadays.

Some are fast for a few days for testing, then the speed is reduced for the free VPN and you got to pay for premium.
So Bitmask is still my best choice for a free VPN.  No need to configure the VPN with the network manager.

In Opera they offer a built-in VPN. Nice idea, but I am more than disappointed with that because that VPN goes off and on all the time.
Most of the time it is off, has no connection and you know what that means when you open a new website.
It will not load.

When I find time I will write to Opera developers.  Better no free VPN than such a one which does not work properly.

wattOS R10 / Installation of VPN fails on wattOS R10
« on: October 05, 2016, 07:43:48 PM »
I created the VPN-connection according to the instructions here
http://planetwatt.com/newforum/index.php?topic=742.0

When I click on the vpn-connection, there is action but the lock disappears , then the network manager tries to connect again ...  until it gives up and there is no vpn-connection.

I ran into problems while creating the VPN-connection as described.
The "key.key" file did not open with leafpad, it opened with  Archiver.
In order to paste the key into it, I had to change the settings of the file to get it opened with leafpad.

I tried the instructions on the vpnbook.com website too and managed to get a VPN-connection, but that was somehow a mistake because there was no way described to logout of the VPN.
I had to reboot my PC to find myself on the normal Ethernet connection.

Does somebody has an idea what to do ?

The following thoughts came to my mind.
In Point 7, Dan says:
Quote
- Copy all of the text between the <ca> </ca> tags and paste it into ca.crt file that you made.
I therefore copied not the tags + text between,  but only the text.
Maybe I should include the tags ?
My english is not good but from my understanding the tags don't belong into the ca.crt file.
Am I correct ?

Another thought:
Maybe something is wrong with the text files I created ?
Here is a screenshot of the files which are located in the folder created for the VPN.

Why are there questionsmarks on the crt. files and why is the .key  file shown as "Apple Keynote 5 ..." file ?
