SOLVED: Best way to upgrade from R9 to R10???
« on: August 24, 2017, 02:10:39 AM »
Allow me to apologize, up front, if this has already been posted in the forums. I searched but could not find the answer, so kindly point me in the right direction, if this is a repeat question.

I have an Asus Eee PC 1000H netbook that’s running 32-bit wattOS R9 comfortably. R9 is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, which will reach end-of-life in April 2019. Last year, I downloaded R10 and played around with the Live CD. It ran a bit sluggish compared to the R9 Live CD. Not sure if that’s because 16.04 is more demanding on my old hardware…or maybe it was my CD-DVD player. Regardless of the reason, I decided not to install R10.

Fast forward to a couple of days ago. I received a pop-up window asking if I wanted to upgrade 14.04 to 16.04 LTS. I know that some distros highly discourage upgrading and recommend a fresh install instead. Since wattOS is not pure Ubuntu, I’m wondering if it would be okay to run the upgrade tool or if that’s a big no-no. If it’s okay to upgrade, will I end up with the same thing as the R10 distro?

On the one hand, since R10 ran a bit sluggish as a Live CD, I’m thinking it might actually be better to do an upgrade, rather than a fresh install, since R9—and thus the core packages—are already installed on the hard drive. On the other hand, since wattOS is not pure Ubuntu, maybe the only way to get to R10 is a fresh install. I have no idea. :-\

I’m still on the fence, anyway, as to whether I want to move to R10 or keep running R9 until April 2019. It would be nice to go ahead and take advantage of the longer support period offered by 16.04 LTS, but I don’t to want to screw up my system if 16.04 really is too heavy for the hardware.

Here are the Asus 1000H netbook specs:
•   Intel Atom N270 (1.6GHz, 512KB cache)
•   2GB DDR2-400 SO-DIMM
•   80GB 5400RPM 2.5” SATA Hard Drive
•   Intel GMA950 Integrated Graphics
•   10” WSVGA 1024×600 LED-backlit screen, 1.3MP webcam
•   Atheros wireless 802.11b/g/n mini PCI-Express card, integrated Bluetooth 2.0
•   3 USB 2.0 ports, 10/100 ethernet jack, MMC/SD card reader, mic in, headphone out, VGA out, Kensington lock slot
•   6-cell 6600mAh battery (Asus claims 7.5hr. battery life)
•   Dimensions: 10.5”x7.5”x1.5”, 3.2lbs. with battery

Why not wait for R11? Will come soon.

That's an option, but I prefer to stick with long term support releases. (I should have mentioned that in my original post.) I didn't think R11 was going to be based on an LTS version of Ubuntu. Is it?

Of course, I'd still be faced with the same question: Use the update manager to get from R9 to R11 or do a fresh install?

We would normally advise not to upgrade the base as wattos is written to it and upgrading could potentially  break things.  I'll hold this comment up until Biff or one of the other senior members advise other (fixes etc for upgrading )

Fresh install!

Fresh install is always best.

R10 is LTS, R11 is not - will be on Ubuntu 17.10 which will basically be supported until July 2018.

R12 will be LTS on ubuntu 18.04 which will be released in May 2018 so there will be a little overlap between the two.

Sorry it took so long to post again and mark this as SOLVED.

As recommended, I did a fresh install of R10 and it worked great. In fact, it is still working great. I've been keeping R10 up to date, waiting for the next LTS version (R12, I assume). Thanks to all who responded.

R11 will be based on Ubuntu 18.04, which is a LTS Release. So you can still hang with the latest and  8) if you want to.  ;)

^In that case, what is the point of R11?

I'm hoping given the time period of this thread that R12 based on 18.04 will be rebadged as R11 ... I'm okay with the ubuntu version skip seeing as 17.10 was not LTS
