wattOS R10 / VPN PPTP
« on: January 31, 2019, 12:06:30 PM »
Does anyone know how to somehow enable vpn-pptp in Microwatt R10? For some reason I can not get it activated. I did install the needed packages for it.

- sudo apt install pptp -y
- systemctl enable pptp
.. etc

The rest was already installed.

wattOS R10 / Nothing but love... but..
« on: January 09, 2019, 12:44:30 PM »
So I love WattOS but I keep running into installation issues, It's why I am hesitant installing WattOS these days.

This was tested in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions on several systems at work.

Issue 1: Encrypt drive with LVM crashes the installer. I can not really offer data evidence of this as I don't seem to get any log files other than that it crashed.
Issue 2: When creating a password, I have to make sure it's not too complicated: Tur0k,Z3ld@'r0xX0rs&. Or else it crashes on this too.
Issue 3: When selecting Update and third party installation, it tends to crash as well.

I have tried it in many configurations but what keeps working for me is no drive encryption, no complicated passwords and no updates/third party stuff.

The thing is that I tested this with Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu and other flavors. No problems and all works as I want it to be. Even Parrot and Kali don't have this issue.

Can others reproduce this as well? Have others had issues with this? Here in the Netherlands part of the new GDPR is also the need for an encrypted drive upon installation.
It means I can't use Microwatt as a server for now for the org I am working for...

And yes, I know it's late to say this since R11 is released this year. But still it's something to think about and test for R11.

wattOS Talk / WattOS Security Distro
« on: January 08, 2019, 11:00:43 AM »
So, I've been delving a lot into IT security these days and already made quite some discoveries at work that I fixed. And then I came up with an idea.

WattOS lends itself well to be a good Security distro. (Looking at Biff now). I personally am using Microwatt as I kind of like the looks of things.

The Questions:

1) Once R11 is released, would it be all right if I modify the Microwatt distro slightly to make it more parrot/kali like?
2) Could this perhaps be a project where more people work on?
3) Could it be called WattOS Security? (Out of respect)
4) Perhaps also be part of this community/site?
5) Would more people be interested in such a distro and perhaps work on it?

It's just a bunch of questions and I am not doing anything just yet as I personally am a bit busy with work. But it's definitely an idea for the near future.

Dear regards,
Me. :)

General Discussion / Something funny I experienced
« on: September 19, 2018, 07:10:25 AM »
So at the foundation I work at an investment was made for new computer systems.

As with anyone who 'thinks' they act more professional, Windows 10, 8GB memory, SSD drives, systems were bought, laptops and PC's. I was given the freedom of installing them myself (as to disable Cortana and block its traffic as well as other stuff that comes with Windows 10.) Office 2016/365 installed everywhere.. Naturally I did all that is needed according to the EU GDPR laws: Encrypting the entire drive, etc. And all works well.

Until my boss noticed I am still using an old Dell Optiplex 760 580 with 4gb ram and a good ol' 500GB sata drive running WattOS-MicroWatt R10. He asked why I, as sysadmin, did not get a new computer. I told him I didn't need one. I ran Chromium browser and opened about eight tabs, of which four were of the office365 page (I apologize), Wordpress Admin to our website and some other sites, I opened Libreoffice Write as well as the shell to connect to the webserver and I already had uVNC running to support someone. I explained to him that this was all I needed. I showed him the system really didn't slow down at all. Worked like a charm.

He cursed at me about the expenses he made, thousands of Euro's spent on expensive new systems and I just proven him that really wasn't needed. I told him it was needed though... (to make him feel better) but next time he really should have listened to me. I do intend to get a few of those old systems for myself at home for testing purposes.

And yes, I do realize that sometimes it's better to just get on with it and buy a new computer, at home I too got a new computer a while ago. But it's still fun to experience a situation like this.

But it did make me laugh when I was out of hearing-range of him. But did any of you ever experienced something like this? It happened yesterday.

Correction: It is a 580, not 760 lol. But the question remains.

General Discussion / WattOS Community OS
« on: September 19, 2018, 06:26:02 AM »
So I have a question.

Why isn't WattOS a community OS? The reason I am asking is we all rely on one person only while there are many who are like minded in keeping WattOS as it is and as it should be. A good communication system and list of What To and What Not could never hurt in this as to keep communications going.

WattOS is a great great product and I love it dearly and I certainly do not want to go against Biffster or even think of taking this project away from him. Just a question.

Regards,
Charlie. :D

General Discussion / WattOS at organisation and/or company
« on: May 23, 2017, 11:14:59 AM »
Before I continue to proceed, I wanted to ask the question on whether it's allowed for me to use WattOS at the non-profit organization I am working for currently.

Also on behalf of a friend if it's allowed to be used in a (small) company as a replacement for his work computer (Windows install where all he needs is Firefox) as we are unsure how licencing works and all.

wattOS R10 / Appreciation
« on: May 09, 2017, 10:09:41 PM »
Just wanted to show my appreciation through this message in regards to WattOS R10 Micro (i3). I've never had a much more stable system running an OS. So kudo's to Biff! It really made me learn a lot about Linux in general.

So no question or anything, just a positive comment.

wattOS R10 / Transparency
« on: February 14, 2017, 08:50:12 PM »
So I have been looking around but can not really find the answer to the following. Most likely I did not look at the right places. The Wiki did not help either unfortunately.

How can I make the terminals in i3 transparent so I can see the background image through them?

General Discussion / Games
« on: February 12, 2017, 03:16:22 PM »
Just wondering.. What type of games, when one has the time to play those, do all play using WattOS/Wine?

For me that's mostly the oldschool games as I mentioned in other topics.

- Red Alert II Yuri's Revenge
- Diablo II Lord of Destruction
- As of today also Shadow Man (with retexture pack)
- As of today also some old DosBOX/MS Dos games.

Again, only when one has the time.. real life tends to catch up a lot for all of us.

Introductions / Hi from Holland
« on: February 11, 2017, 04:13:10 PM »
I already wrote some of it elsewhere in this forum but found this one is a proper forum area to do so.

So I'm Charlie from Holland and new in the world of Linux. After years of using Windows I decided to, and force myself, to leave Windows and install Lubuntu on both my main system (built myself) as well as my secondary backup system (Dell Optiplex 980). I must say that sometimes, especially when new to it, Linux based distros can be very frustrating in terms of the ease that Windows offers.... but with some asking around in great OPEN communities one can always find a good working LEGAL solution that turns out to actually make a person smarter and always works.

Though I too once just downloaded whatever I wanted with a crack, hack and Serialz, for the last six to seven years I already explored Open Source and found that the solutions given there was often greater and more what I wanted than what I got with other products. So for me the Open Source side of things has always been of tremendous help to me. Only last week did I discover WattOS and fell in love with i3 immediately after I found it on Youtube. (Actually through a channel known as Linux and Other Stuff, not Biff. Sorry. hehe)

So I decided to install it on the Dell system. Currently I am using that to sync my files to and from through SSH as well as play some oldschool games on it; Diablo II Lod and Red Alert II Yuri's Revenge amongst others. The future plan is to get a better supported video card for my main system (ATI Radeon HD5800 is supported up to Ubuntu systems 14.xx) so I can use that as my game system again while the Dell will become my own secure web and file server so I can start the XHTML thing again after many years of not doing that stuff.

Currently I am also planning in to have MicroWatt-i3 R10 installed on my main system.

And that's about it.. I love the commandline a lot more than ever before. :D

wattOS R10 / Screenshots and Too large icons
« on: February 10, 2017, 07:57:29 PM »
Hi,

So I have two questions. One came with the other actually.

I wanted to make a screenshot of Abiword showing its icons way too large, about 500% too large. so..

1) How do I make screenshots? In Lubuntu it's as simple as hitting the Print Screen button et voila, it's in the home folder.
2) How can I make icon sizes smaller? I haven't seen this issue happening in abiword before.

Cheers. ^_^

Feedback and Suggestions / Just wanted to give a compliment
« on: February 10, 2017, 12:27:00 PM »
I'm rather new in the world of Linux, I forced myself to stop using Windows 10 about three weeks ago and jumped ship to Lubuntu on both systems.

I found out about MicroWatt with i3 last week and tried it out on my older Dell system and works like a train. I never knew things could be so easy and yet so awesome.

So a big thank you to the creator(s)!

PS:
Just a question on the side. Does Wine and gaming work on the i3 file manager?
