News and Announcements / Update for the community 26-10-22
« on: October 26, 2022, 10:18:35 PM »
Hi Folks

I know things have been quiet here on the forum but I would just like to update on what has been going on behind the scenes

As some of you know,. we did a limited "FEELER" iso last year which we invited a few select members to trial and just give some initial thoughts on.. And we posted some initial thoughts, screenshots and a video or 2 about it :)

We ran the test into early this year with Leenie, Biff and myself comparing the results and looking at how the various linux flavours and the kernels are currently supporting older hardware in general and essentially... we are still here.. still working in the background and this group is still active.

If you have any questions for us.. please do ask and we would just like to apologise for the quiet status of late but with our real life jobs, and current events.. we have had our hands full.. !!

General Discussion / Playing with the Budgie and other bored notes
« on: February 03, 2019, 12:48:39 PM »
So i've been having a bit of a play with the new 19.04 edition of Budgie, which is one of the ubuntu flavours and despite the fact its only 64 bit now.. I must admit, I've been impressed by its speed and ease of use. Up against, Xubuntu and Lubuntu .. I much prefer  This version of Ubuntu.

On the "bored" note...... I dropped a new OS on my spare lappy to compare against WattOS the other week.. This OS was the quirky and unusual Elive OS which is based on Deb and uses Enlightenment.
Elive was born in Belgium prior to 2005 as a private experiment by its founder to customize a Knoppix Live CD running the Enlightenment and with the designs based in the Evil Entity distro, it was called Tezcatlipotix.

Do i like it.... not sure to be honest.. I've never been a fan of enlightenment (bodhi especially) but i must admit, Elive has caused me to sit back and have a second think.... It wont be a replacement though for me against the much simpler to use WattOS.

So.. thats my thoughts for the week....

wattOS R10 / MicroWatt R10 question
« on: April 27, 2017, 05:06:49 PM »

globetrotterdk 8:23 AM
I would like to change the Microwatt R10 install LightDM background. Where can I do this?

globetrotterdk 8:33 AM
I am getting hit badly by the Microwatt r10 uefi bug. I was able to work around the issue on two laptops by using a USB CD/DVD drive, rather than a USB pen drive. This doesn't work on a third laptop however. Any work arounds? All three booting in "legacy" mode. The "problem" computer is an Acer Travelmate P633. Any help please?

wattOS Talk / WattOS as a radio station?
« on: August 18, 2016, 02:36:43 PM »
I'm looking to hopefully using Watt as a Radio station service in the near future and just wanted to ask the community on a product of choice before i commit.

On windows.... I was used to using SAM broadcaster. I note Linux's equivalent is a programme called Rivendell.

Has anyone tried this programme yet and if so... Some pointers and help would be great!
Otherwise.. can WattOS run it?

Programme website is http://www.rivendellaudio.org

Linux and desktops / Elinks help lol .. sorry
« on: February 21, 2016, 02:11:18 PM »
I should be shot for asking about this, given the amount of time i've been using linux, but alas i've never used elinks before and have need now to browse on the sly without prying eyes wondering.

I'd be most greatful for a cheat list of commands for using elinks listed so i can just to a screenprint and print please :))

Many thanks

News Archives / IRC Facility closing
« on: May 16, 2015, 06:35:18 PM »
It is with great regret that I have to pull the live IRC facility that I have been donating for the last year or so to WattOS.

It has not taken off which has saddened me and as funds are the way they are, I cannot afford to keep paying out of my own funds for a service not being used.

I will continue here on the forums as will the other admin as usual so there is no break in service.

Feedback and Suggestions / Old Old pc's and WattOS
« on: March 20, 2015, 04:32:23 PM »
I've noticed with linux of late that so many, include old faithful - Debian, are now moving in a direction that old old pc's simply cant be used anymore..

Now WattOS has always been good with old pc's but this too is getting hard due to LTS's being used.

I reckon an adventure could be worth a look at by Biff into old pc support as I use a linux system that can still be installed (and current) on Pentium 3's (1000Mhz copperhead)

It's not ubuntu based... its not red hat or centos or debian or any of the mainstream distros either... Its the very small (30mb iso!!!!! and a stupid 100mb hard drive installed) designed to be used with a pc with just 256mb ram. (16 MB of RAM and a little swap memory is possible if you really want to get nerdy)

BusyBox, a recent Linux kernel and GNU software. It boots with Syslinux and provides more than 200 Linux commands, the lighttpd web server, SQLite database, rescue tools, IRC client, SSH client and server powered by Dropbear, X window system, JWM (Joe's Window Manager), gFTP, Geany IDE, Mozilla Firefox, AlsaPlayer, GParted, a sound file editor and more is what it can come with.. i know it will happily run midori, and it can connect to wpa2-psk.. so modern wifi is catered for.

Downsides.... tazpkg for packages and tazpanel.. so limited there, no persistance either... but can be added if wanted only with ext2, 3  along with syslinux or extlinux boot loader.. last downside really.... its GNU/Linux  ;D ;D ;D  so not for the real newcomers to linux.

What do you guys think on this firstly re keeping old stuff alive...

Also Biff... whats your thoughts as it would be you building it  ;)
