wattOS R9 / Re: Screen goes blank on HP Compaq 6720s
« on: July 20, 2015, 03:09:48 PM »
I installed standard Ubuntu 14.04.2 distribution and it does the same :(

After some investigation, I've found possible reason. Apparently it is caused by old Intel Graphics chipset. New SNA acceleration doesn't work and it should be downgraded to the old UXA method.

Unfortunately, the way shown in this thread, dosen't work for me http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2182033

What can I do?

Forget problem.
Actually after some investigation, I've found, that I do not have to install anything :) Modem works out of the box just doesn't pop up with install dialog as it is said on other websites.

wattOS R9 / Screen goes blank on HP Compaq 6720s
« on: July 19, 2015, 07:22:04 AM »
I run R9 LXDE 32b on my HP Compaq 6720s and occasionally screen goes blank on browsers.
It happens on Firefox and Chrome as well though on different websites.
It doesn't happen on my Acer laptop so I suspect a driver problem.
What can I do about it?

I have found something like

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update && apt-get install usb-modeswitch
but when I run it, I get errors at the end

Code: [Select]
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

What should I do?

wattOS R9 / [SOLVED] Modeswitch and ZTE MF627 modem
« on: July 15, 2015, 01:43:04 PM »
Hi,

I am a novice in Linux so forgive me for my ignorance.

I need to install ZTE MF627 modem but there is no official Linux driver for it.
What I've found is, that it needs Modeswitch to work but I don't know how to install it. There is some instruction here http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/ but I don't fully get it. There is to many ..if ..options.

What should I do in some relatively simple steps?

or maybe there is any other way to get this modem to work?

@BALLOON
You don't think I insisted on using old OpenOffice release instead of Apache OpenOffice, do you?

AOO is not only successor of OO but has been taken over by AOO. It is still maintained on the same website, in the same shape and form. There is no difference and even application itself uses OpenOffice name almost everywhere, not Apache OpenOffice.

What you said sounds like you would say, that Youtube is no longer Youtube but there is that old one and the new one owned by Google accidentally still with the same look and feel and the same website.

I understand, that using LO is natural choice, when you have it included in distribution. This is not the case in wattOS.

Thank you both Maroman and BALLOON for your answers. You both were very helpful.

@BALLOON
What is an advantage of LibreOffice over OpenOffice?

Some products come and go not because they are worse but because they do.. developers come and go.. products rise and fall..

OO has recently been overtaken by Apache Software Foundation and has changed a lot since then, being more compatible with MS Office. I do not want to stick to OO against LO but to move I have to have solid reasons.

To be specific, my main concern is MS Office compatibility.

I wanted to install OpenOffice using package here http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html but it contains 40+ packages not one as I expected.

I am not sure which one should I install first, next.. or maybe there is any other way to install them all?

Thank you biffbaxter for your explanation. It is enough for me.
Of course I'll remove link from my signature. I've read forum rules and guides and didn't find anything against it but if you say it is not ok, I'll comply ;D

Thank you cheiron  ;D

As opposed to you, having 3 terminals makes me confused because I am not Linux professional, just common user. That's why I started this topic. I didn't know what to use when I want to install new application which fails to install using GDebi.

So which one should I use in such case? Any?
