Hello friends! I hope you're all doing well!

Long ago, I had settled in with the Ghostery browser on my Android. It was wonderful (for my needs). Unfortunately, its latest update had MAJOR issues and rendered my entire phone unusable! It would completely freeze my phone...even without opening the browser!  >:(

I was finally able to uninstall it.  8)

Since then, I've been using the Via browser. It's a tiny download...no ads...and works well.

Take care everyone!  :)

I'm liking Brave! I do have one issue; in that, it won't allow me to sign in on one website...have to figure that out.

I like how it offers to make some pages "mobile friendly" too.

It also makes the font bigger in cases like this (typing this message) without having to enlarge the page.

Good find leenie! I might give Brave a try on my computer too.

Thanks leenie. Sounds like I should give Brave a spin surf.  ;D

Slimjet?

http://www.slimjet.com/en/dlpage.php

Fast, stable browser and less RAM usage than Firefox and Chromium.

The downside is that you have to reinstall it when new versions are released, but that's easily done.

32bit Firefox is working for me again...not sure what the problem was.

Hi everyone; I hope you're all doing well!

I have a question that may draw some criticism for my stupidity...but here goes... ;D

My wife uses our old 32bit laptop to watch Netflix and Amazon videos. The 32bit Firefox has stopped playing them for some reason, and I can't figure out why.

So...

I did some searching and found the last release of the 32bit version of Google Chrome. I threw caution to the wind...downloaded it and installed it. It plays both Netflix and Amazon perfectly.

So...

I made apps for both of them so that they would open in their own window. I then added "NoDisplay=true" to Google Chrome's desktop.file in /usr/share/applications so that the Chrome browser isn't "available" for my wife to use for browsing. All that can be done with Chrome is watching either Netflix or Amazon.

That's basically all that computer is used for...but...am I playing with fire?  ;D

Is anyone else experiencing this problem with 32bit Firefox lately? Firefox plays both perfectly on our 64bit machines...

Thanks!

Tips and Tricks / Re: How to install a VPN on your system
« on: February 26, 2017, 01:53:46 PM »
Hi jelena,

Sorry for your trouble.

Those directions are quite old and worked on a previous version of watt. I haven't tried it on the latest version.

There is a VPN that's open source and easily installed called bitmask. I installed it, and it worked great. There's also a small amount of discussion about it here on the forum...just use the search feature, and you'll find it.

Here's the website for bitmask...

https://bitmask.net/

I'll see if I can edit the original post since it's so old.

I know this isn't anything to do with Linux, but if anyone here ever plays MarioKart online, and you see someone named BurntNoodle, that's me.  ;D

General Discussion / Re: Income Tax Software
« on: February 14, 2017, 01:23:51 AM »
Thought I'd give my personal review on this topic...for what that's worth... ;D

I just finished doing our taxes with TaxAct. My wife asked about it on her Travel Agency's Facebook page, and several people gave it rave reviews...so...I went ahead with it.

For anyone interested...

I wouldn't personally recommend TaxAct unless you're a stickler for details; which means, paying EXTREMELY close attention to "options" rather than being asked specific questions (like TurboTax and H&R Block does) to complete the different steps.

Compared to TurboTax and even H&R Block, it's EXTREMELY easy to miss deductions and even pertinent information that's required. It took me about 2 1/2 hours to fill out our taxes with TaxAct; whereas, TurboTax and H&R Block took roughly 1 1/2 hours...give or take. I had to keep going back and filling in information that I missed. Plus, it asked me for information at one point, then when I got ready to e-file, I had to enter the same information with even more detail...too much to explain!

Now, I'm basing this off of past experiences with both TurboTax and H&R Block, so there could be some changes in both of them that I'm unaware of.

Total finished cost was $70. Not enough savings for the problems I ran into...but that's me.  >:(

They asked for a rating of 1 - 10 as to whether I'd recommend it to others...I gave it a 5.

It's most certainly a pleasure to meet you!  I would dearly love to visit Holland one day, so I envy you. For now, Rick Steves' travel shows are the closest I can get. LOL!

Welcome to Linux!

Hmmm...as to the icon size...I'm not sure. It could be an issue of the icon set that you're using may not have enough icons to cover every situation, so it's possibly adding icons that aren't sized for that particular instance. Again...I don't remember which icons are included in i3  :-[ , but have you tried a different icon set just to see if it happens with other icons?

That's all I've got on that, so I'll defer to other's input.

I can't remember if Scrot was/is included in i3. Sorry.

Read all of this before you make a decision...

You can try installing Scrot by opening your Terminal and entering...

sudo apt-get install scrot

Then try using the Prtscrn key. If it's successful, it will place the picture in your Home folder. Open the File Manager, and you will see it in addition to all of the other folders that are visible. If that doesn't work, it will take a key bind to make PrtScrn take a screenshot, and since I'm not on i3, I'm not sure what that keybind would be or where you should put it. Sorry.

IF...and I repeat...IF I remember correctly, i3 also uses the file manager PCManFM. If you install the Xfce4 Screenshooter (as outlined above), afterwards, you should be able to open PCManFM and click the "Applications" option in the left-side panel. Then click on "Accessories", and it should be there.

Again, this is the long way around, and I'm not on i3...so take all of this into consideration before you proceed. Perhaps an i3 user will chime in soon.  ;)

Great input from cheiron.  :D

Which watt are you using? Microwatt or LXDE?

My personal favorite is to use the Xfce4 Screenshooter in LXDE. It will put it in your Accessories category of the menu (in LXDE). If you try to install it, it will also want to add the Xfce4 panel; however, you can install it without adding the panel by opening your Terminal and entering the following command...

sudo apt-get install xfce4-screenshooter --no-install-recommends

That will give you the full functionality of the screenshooter without installing the extra panel. I haven't used Microwatt in a while, but it should work the same. Hope that helps.

If Scrot isn't already included, you can install it and make a keybind to use the PRTSC key (if it doesn't do it automatically), so that when you hit the PRTSC it will take a screenshot and place it in your Home folder. It depends on which you prefer. A GUI (Xfce4 Screenshooter) or use Scrot (the PRTSC key) with various Terminal commands. It depends on your preference.  :)
