General Discussion / Re: Security Ideas for WattOS

Not a WattSec answer to Kali/Parrot?

But will these browsers also be secure out of the box?

As for speed/heaviness. I've been running ParrotSec on my laptop after giving up on Kali. That too has Firefox and it runs quite well. I guess it all depends on how you install and use it.

Perhaps time for a benchmark to compare several browsers against one another in terms of memory/cpu usage as well as speed and size and security.

Does anyone has ideas on the OS idea itself as well? It would be cool if more people could join in. :)

For now go for Firefox ESR. It's highly adaptable. Runs on Kali as well.

Did you get a good look at why NOT to use TENS already?

Currently I am already testing i3 Gaps on Ubuntu Minimal ISO. Slowly I am starting to understand why Biffster is taking long.
Damn what a lot of stuff to remove as well as actions that needs to be done.

As to Biff: perhaps i3 Gaps could be your friend. It really looks awesome, even if it's just appearance that is added. I am sure you'd love this.

wattOS R10 / VPN PPTP
« on: January 31, 2019, 12:06:30 PM »
Does anyone know how to somehow enable vpn-pptp in Microwatt R10? For some reason I can not get it activated. I did install the needed packages for it.

- sudo apt install pptp -y
- systemctl enable pptp
.. etc

The rest was already installed.

Invest in an x64 system to get any proper NAS working. They're not that expensive.

Given that you are a teacher, you should be aware that 32-bit is not really supported anymore. ;)

There is one issue with TENS though. It's an NSA/AF related OS. Is it really secure or is it as secure as NSA want it to be?
Also. Who really owns .mil TDL?

So perhaps TAILS would be a better solution to combine it with a security related OS.

CharlieK, you have my attention. I like this idea! I too, am very security minded and do everything (including using TENS) I can to be as secure as possible.

wattOS R10 / Nothing but love... but..
« on: January 09, 2019, 12:44:30 PM »
So I love WattOS but I keep running into installation issues, It's why I am hesitant installing WattOS these days.

This was tested in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions on several systems at work.

Issue 1: Encrypt drive with LVM crashes the installer. I can not really offer data evidence of this as I don't seem to get any log files other than that it crashed.
Issue 2: When creating a password, I have to make sure it's not too complicated: Tur0k,Z3ld@'r0xX0rs&. Or else it crashes on this too.
Issue 3: When selecting Update and third party installation, it tends to crash as well.

I have tried it in many configurations but what keeps working for me is no drive encryption, no complicated passwords and no updates/third party stuff.

The thing is that I tested this with Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu and other flavors. No problems and all works as I want it to be. Even Parrot and Kali don't have this issue.

Can others reproduce this as well? Have others had issues with this? Here in the Netherlands part of the new GDPR is also the need for an encrypted drive upon installation.
It means I can't use Microwatt as a server for now for the org I am working for...

And yes, I know it's late to say this since R11 is released this year. But still it's something to think about and test for R11.

Hah cool!

We could have a good secure system aimed at testing and more!

For now my time is rather taken. But I expect within two weeks I can actually do more.

Any other people wanting to join up?

wattOS Talk / WattOS Security Distro
« on: January 08, 2019, 11:00:43 AM »
So, I've been delving a lot into IT security these days and already made quite some discoveries at work that I fixed. And then I came up with an idea.

WattOS lends itself well to be a good Security distro. (Looking at Biff now). I personally am using Microwatt as I kind of like the looks of things.

The Questions:

1) Once R11 is released, would it be all right if I modify the Microwatt distro slightly to make it more parrot/kali like?
2) Could this perhaps be a project where more people work on?
3) Could it be called WattOS Security? (Out of respect)
4) Perhaps also be part of this community/site?
5) Would more people be interested in such a distro and perhaps work on it?

It's just a bunch of questions and I am not doing anything just yet as I personally am a bit busy with work. But it's definitely an idea for the near future.

Dear regards,
Me. :)

Indeed. Also silly if you realize they left in their harddrives and decide to inspect the contents and suddenly realize they did not remove anything. *sigh.. real life experience*

Seems it's still the case. I just tried it when in need and nerdscout.com told me this message.

"Error. Page cannot be displayed. Please contact your service provider for more details. (10)"

My Service Provider never blocked it or anything, nor does my security. Perhaps a bad on their end?

Loved your story! I have a 14 year old pc. Intel workstation, 8gb ram, 2.66 quad core processor. Friends think I'm nuts for running old pc. Fun stuff.

Those old stations truly still work well.
