Title: WattOS R8 MATE Problems: Is it just me?!..
Post by: Az4x4 on May 18, 2014, 03:40:12 PM
Installed WattOS R8 MATE on my ASUS i7 laptop. Everything went well. Seemed to be no issues with the installation. Then I downloaded Google Chrome and tried to use Gdebi to install it. It asked me for my password, but when I typed it in it told me my password was incorrect and would not proceed with the installation. ..My password was not incorrect, it's just that for whatever reason R8 has a problem remembering what the correct password is. Then I opened Gdebi using my password in Terminal, and everything worked fine. Got Google Chrome installed without further problems. ..But what's going on with R8 having trouble remembering passwords, and how do I go about fixing it?

One other issue came up as well. Made software changes and needed to edit my "Applications  Places  System" main desktop menu. However when I right clicked on it and selected "Edit Menus," instead of the main menu editor opening nothing happens. Nothing I do opens the main menu editor. Any help with this issue would also be appreciated!

Other than those two issues, so far WattOS R8 MATE is a pleasure to work with. Once I have answers to the failure to recognize my password and the inability to open and use the main menu editor I'll be 100% satisfied with what WattOS R8 MATE provides!..

Thanks for any help that may be forthcoming. Haven't run into these problems in other Debian based MATE distros, so really not sure what to look for in correcting them..

George

Have you looked at gksu-properties yet to make sure it is set to sudo and no su ?
That is the first point of call as R8 changes on installation to su    :)

To check... open terminal and type gksu-properties
That opens caja

Then change "Behaviour" drop down to "sudo" and close  :)

Let us know if that works

Thanks Cheiron and Balloon for the input. In gksu-properties I've already changed 'su' to 'sudo'. Makes no apparent difference when using Gdebi to install a program. Still won't accept my password. Tells me it's incorrect, which it's not! ..This issue, and the lack of ability to right click and edit the Applications Places System menu in R8 MATE is troublesome to say the least.. Not going to give up on it though! Solutions will be forthcoming I'm certain..

Is it possible to set an admin password in a running Debian system?  I'd like to do that, because I once logged out by mistake from a gksu session and had to restart to have my user password accepted.

Thanks in advance for assisting a newcomer to Debian!

Thanks for the effort Cheiron, but that's just too weird!

I rebooted using my password. No problem.

Downloaded Virtualbox manually. Ran the .deb installation file in Gdebi. It asked for my password. I typed it in. Once again it tells me my password is incorrect. Unfortunately it's not, and therein lies the problem.

How would I go about checking and resetting my password in R8 MATE? Obviously something's screwed up someplace, just that I've not run into this problem before and don't really know where to look..

Also, were you able to right click on Applications Places System, select Edit Menus, and get it to work? ..That's the other problem I'm not sure how to solve having never experienced it before..

Just to show I'm not crazy, here's part of Trench Reynolds' latest review in which he reports the same root password problem when using Gdebi that I'm dealing with:

..wattOS announced that they had released version 8, or Release 8 (R8) as they call it. I

to change password...

in terminal - whoami

that gives you your username

then type passwd
it will then ask for current password, then ask you to change and confirm.. log out and log back in and thats that process done

as for the edit menu... you need to right click on the taskbar .. not on the "applications, places, system" then you can edit the toolbar and add and remove stuffs :)

Thanks again for your efforts Cheiron. Checked my password in Terminal. It was right as is. Changed it anyway. Rebooted. Works fine, but still won't work in Gdebi.

So you know I'm not alone in reporting this problem, here's what Trench Reynolds had to say about the same issue in his latest blog post: ...wattOS announced that they had released version 8.. Installation was smooth as silk.. The only problem I had was that Update Manager and GDebi didn

no idea why your posts are being cut short lol..

gdebi works ok for me for installing things on R8 Mate (32 bit)
but then for gdebi i always download to harddrive first then open gdebi as opposed to open with gdebi option on download

i havent tried the 64bit version..

..Also, I know how to add and delete things from the task bar. I've used MATE since the day it became available. Was a happy user of Gnome 2 for years before that! But it's not adding and removing things from the task bar that I'm concerned with. It's editing the Applications Places System menu that isn't working for me in R8. ..If you click on System/Preferences/Main Menu the menu editor is supposed to open. You can also access it by right clicking on Applications Places System itself and choosing "Edit Menus". However in my case, no matter which way I approach it, the Menu Editor will not start, which leaves me unable to change the way my Applications Places System menu is set up. ..Have never experienced this problem before in any other Debian based MATE installation I've tried, and I've tried almost all of them..

In the meantime I'll reboot to my 64bit Debian Wheezy Point Linux MATE installation and use it. It works perfectly, no problems at all. I'll keep current with the message board, and if someone offers suggestions that work with R8 MATE as I seek to solve these two issues I'll be greatly relieved!.. Hate it when things don't work as they're designed to..

It could be something in Mozo (usr/bin/mozo) not set right... only guessing here. Hopefully Biff will get on this when he comes online
Title: Re: WattOS R8 MATE Problems: Is it just me?!..

The menu editing problem you are noting is an upstream packaging problem. We are running the newer mate 1.8 and the program that does this is called 'mozo'. If you launch it from command line you will see the error..

This is a mate 1.8 problem for any Debian release running it, not just wattOS....older 1.6 does not have the problem which is why you have not seen it.

https://github.com/mate-desktop/debian-packages/issues/55

Below is a github link discussing. The fix has been applied, just not been replicated to the repos yet it appears.

Looks like someone made their own unofficial .deb fix for it if you want to use it, but I am going to wait for the upstream packages to get fixed officially on this error.

Thanks Biff. The unofficial .deb fix for Mozo in MATE 1.8 works a charm. You're right to wait till the upstream packages get fixed to rectify this error in R8, but for those who need to access the Main Menu Editor before that happens the unofficial fix works perfectly..

Now if there were a way to get Gdebi to recognize root passwords in R8 64bit Mate without having to open it via the Terminal, then both issues I've noted here could be marked solved!..

A solution for the failure to recognize and accept proper root passwords in R8 MATE 64bit continues to elude me. Not only does this error show up when attempting to use Gdebi, but it shows up in anything else I run that needs root authorization.

The latest was with Virtualbox. Downloaded the latest VB .deb file and successfully installed it by running gdebi-gtk in Terminal. Once Virtualbox was installed, when I sought to add the latest VB Extensions to it Virtualbox itself asked for root authorization to do so. When I *correctly* entered my root password I was once again informed that my password was "incorrect".. Not good!!

Don't know for sure what it will take to correct this wide spread issue, but for the moment it's on the brink of being a deal breaker with WattOS R8 MATE 64bit -- at least with newbies, till it's finally and completely fixed.. Any working solution would be MORE than welcome!!!..

Out loud thoughts more than anything....

You're using virtual box.. i'm using virtual manager (but then i am on wattos 7.5 lxde for base pc) and mate works with passwords with me no problems and i cant seem to replicate your problem with the passwords..

just idly wondering if virtual box and virtual machine are that different enough to try with the other...

Az4x4

you are the only one reporting the problem so far. So lets not get crazy about "widespread problems" there are other newbies using R8-64 mate.. I understand the frustration and there may be a bug to be found as its brand new mate 1.8 and new release...So lets troubleshoot.

Do me a favor and tell me what is the output of the "groups" command in a terminal.

Also take a screenshot of the password prompt screen when you launch gdebi, synaptic, whatever from the gui (not terminal) and paste it here if you can please. the SU and SUDO ones look different. (want to make sure your gksu-properties are right)

tks...biff

Also I noticed you said something earlier as well

"I rebooted using my root password. No problem" - just to be clear - you did not create a root account or something of the sort? allow login as root is disabled and the system is setup to emulate an ubuntu type environment where you elevate your privs with your password - essentially making you root temporarily to do whatever, but there is no "root" account by default.

also just to be clear one more time - you checked "gksu-properties" from terminal and its set to "sudo" and not "su" correct?

tks...biff

I don't suppose you could have appended when installing a space at the end of the password, which is discounted in some places but rigidly enforced when looking for permission to install ?

I felt that this problem might be difference between 32bit and 64bit.
For example, install deb package for 32 bits in wattOS for 64 bits.
(In the downloading page of Google Chrome, a default becomes deb of 32bit)

Or deb package is damaged and may fail in installation.

Not being any type of expert..   but it's not unheard of for people to set some root type password before they change keyboard settings.. which in turn can change some symbols if used..... I have  more than one PC with a variation of keyboard layouts from differing languages, which i have messed up on install by doing the above..

Biff. Sorry it took some time to get back to you. Been busy setting my summer place in cool north-eastern Arizona up the way I want it and haven't stayed up with the conversation here as closely as I'd like to.

..what is the output of the "groups" command in a terminal..
mm7@mm7:~$ groups
mm7 cdrom floppy sudo audio dip video plugdev scanner bluetooth netdev
mm7@mm7:~$

..Also take a screenshot of the password prompt screen when you launch gdebi, synaptic, whatever from the gui (not terminal) and paste it here if you can please. the SU and SUDO ones look different. (want to make sure your gksu-properties are right)..

Unfortunately, when I open gdebi and bring up the password prompt it locks the entire system up, not allowing me to do anything other than enter my password or cancel out. Won't let me capture a screenshot image or do anything else when it's open..

I've continued to pursue the issue of R8 MATE 64bit failing to recognize my password when I launch apps such as Gdebi, apps that depend on password authorization to run. Even in Virtualbox, when I try to install the latest Extension Pack, the problem rears its ugly head and won't let me proceed. So far the best I've come up with is to make sure gksu-properties is set to *sudo* instead of *su*. However even with that set correctly the issue of my password being rejected as *incorrect*, even though it's not, remains the same - still not working..

I'll continue to monitor this forum and elsewhere for a possible solution to this problem. In the meanwhile I'll move on to less troublesome things and return for another look at R8 some other time..
