wattOS R8

  • wattOS R8 news and updates

Quick update for those who watch wattOS and its status.

R8 development is under way, and there are some changes that will be communicated and discussed in the forums over the next 30 days, but I wanted to give the highlights here.

    1. We are going to have a change in what wattOS is derived from. It is currently an Ubuntu based system, and that will be changing to Debian for R8. There are lots of reasons why, but needless to say its a change and I believe it will be for the better. I think it will open things up to some architectures and builds we do not have currently, and make a lighter more flexible base in which older specification hardware will be able to continue to run.

    2. There will be a facelift to the look and feel of the distro and website. Not so much to the underlying plumbing (other than trying to likely change the forums to something that will allow us to open them back up and get rid of spammers easier.). Freshen up the look and colors a bit (still green) but the updates will help differentiate and keep things somewhat attractive :).

    3. We will continue to develop the LXDE and Mate' desktops for sure. There are disussions to potentially work on an ARM release (for you Pi people :) - but nothing official yet. Other ideas or questions are welcome related to what you might like pre-made

    Enjoy!

Mike Dietz Too funny I got it on an old laptop too which just boots to youtube so I can relax and watch videos. I hate the roxfiler filemanager though but love conky system info on the desktop pinboard which shows my system running in only 66 Meg of RAM.

Leenie Gilmore Gateway Solo 3100, 160 mb ram 233mhz process speed (14 yrs old). No sound :D. JWM is default desktop and I shut off conky and pinboard, using Qupzilla. It is pokey but it runs.

Dave Fitzgerald The antiX folks have collaborated with the MEPIS folks and produced MX-14 - I'm running it right now. Check it out as it may give you some ideas...
