wattOS R7 (release 7) is a remaster of ubuntu 13.04 and is fully compatible with ubuntu
repositories. wattOS is nearing 5 years of being available as a distro.
It is running a custom LXDE desktop with the utilities you
would expect with as little fat as possible for the average user. The
philosophy is to be minimal but functional and let you choose what you
want to install but to give you a good basic OS with a foundation to
customize how you like.
Things like printing, user management, multi-monitor support,
power management and software management is all installed and ready to
be used. The user interface is simple and foregoes all the extra un-needed
bells and whistles so you can have a fast efficient system.
wattOS should be able to run on any system that has a Pentium 3 class
processor or better with 192-256MB of RAM to install but less than 128MB after
install is complete.
wattOS also can support the fastest and newest systems with the 64bit multi-core
systems and large RAM and performance requirements.
There are two core versions of wattOS - 32bit and 64bit.
There is an additional version being released with R7 called Microwatt.
That will be covered in a separate post as its a new addition to the family.
It is focused on being smaller, minimal and even faster that the current offering.
It will not be for everyone, but it will consume less memory, be faster, and
get out of your way :). Microwatt details coming in the next couple days.
The 64bit system has the following items
Core system - Linux Kernel 220.127.116.11

The 32bit system has the same items as above but supports older systems
and processors and can run on newer systems as well. Choose 32bit if you
are unsure which version to run, or ask in the forums.
Changes you may notice from previous versions if you have used them
- Removal of a chat client - It has not been used and there are lots of
web based chat clients, additionally you can install one that you like
from the software repos.
- login manager changed to lightDM -
- Removed Jupiter - support from the developer has ceased.
I am currently looking at another tool called TLP that is command line only
and I may make a GUI for it and test in the fall "ditch" release for
brave souls to test. All the other power tools are still intact (powertop, xcfe-power manager, etc)
- Removed LXFinder - PCManFM now has a built in search function
- Removed LXScreenshot utility - Pinta has a screenshot utility built in
- Flattened and simplified (smaller) theme installed
- Cleaned up and optimized lots of things behind the scenes.
